Consider dirt alternatives like vermiculite, perlite, and ceramic or glass "grow-stones" as a growing medium, and hook up drip lines and drain lines that return unused nutrient solution. Issue is that you could grow a ton of mold/mildew/algae without beneficial to keep them down.
The difference between aero and hydro is how the nutrients are applied. In hydro you drip through the media or leave the plant roots suspended in a reservoir which can get pretty heavy. In aero, you mist the roots with the solution and keep them at nearly 100% humidity without actually keeping them wet, and keep a reservoir hooked up somewhere else. Both work with fountain pumps, but aero works better at higher pressures.
