I was once going camping with a few friends. Two of my friends bought Bivvys. Another two brought tents. I had two tarps.
I put one tarp on the group and layed another heavy-duty large tarp over me. It covered all my supplies and was actually pretty comfortable.
When we woke up the Bivvys were soaked with all the gear inside damp and wet. One of them even built up a small puddle. The tents were also wet but not to the same extent. And me? I was perfectly dry.
I'm not sure if this is anybodybody elses experience but Bivvys seem weak and flimsy to me. I'm sure they have their place, if its summer and dry. Tents are another matter, but the only tents that I ever really loved were A Frame. And I can make an A-frame out of tarps. So unless I'm going on a three+ day trip with several people I just bring two or three tarps. It's all iv'e ever needed.
