>>589507You should probably ask /k/. But, I personally live by the mantra of 'Grab sks go innawoods'. Russian SKS is a good choice. Really cheap here in Canada ($98 at Canadian tire around christmas), cheap surplus ammo, intermediate round (7.62×39), semi automatic, and built like a cosmoline covered brick shit house. It will honestly kill anything in North America.
Alternatively, a Lee Enfield No4 Mk2 sporter in .303 Brit is a good choice. Bit heavier, but the 60° bolt turn is like sex. 10 full size rounds, will not fail you. Getting a bit pricey though.
The gf swears by a custom built .257, but it's totally custom, built to her.
If you aren't in danger of getting mauled by carnivores, or aren't going to be hunting medium to big game, a Ruger 10/22 is a good choice. Cheap as hell, 30 round mag, .22lr. Great rifles. You can get the take down version to store it in your bag.
If you plan on encountering bears, a large calibre handgun may be your best bet. Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casul is a bit rough on the hands, wallet, and ears, but will kill a bear dead. A Glock (43?) In 10mm will do the truck, as will any .44 magnum revolver.
A 12 gauge pump action like a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500 with buckshot and rifled slugs may be good for you if you need an all rounder.
All in all, it's all dependent on what you may be encountering and what you like. Research, test, and make sure you like your firearm before you have to depend on it for your life.
