One of my goretex softshells was ruined by it, it now sparkles from the tiny bits of sand everywhere inside the fabric, and once it's wet, it's like it turns to mud, and totally lets water through.
Softshells are actually perfectly suited to the Sahara, they're warm enough when it's cold, they provide enough protection from sun so it's a bit cooler inside, and breathable enough so you don't sweat too much. Just give up on using it later on to protect yourself from rain, though it's still good for snow. Because yes, it happens to rain and snow in the Sahara.
