I get the impression they only work against cuts though, not piercing which makes them a bit useless if you're working with a set of small gouges. I tried using my Dad's and found it quite uncomfortable to work with but that's probably just cause I'm not used to it. He did once stab right through his with a small gouge like I said though.
The approach I use is to make sure that if you slip you're not going to stab yourself somewhere important, like the thigh or the dick and to make sure you leave enough excess timber on a project to allow you to grip it enough - you don't need to cut your spoon or kuksa or whatever down to its final size first, leave a handle to grip then remove that last.
