Actually doing it all under your own steam requires a fair bit of money up front that would be 'reasonable for you to live on' during the course of your stay if you're not full time employed.

The Australian Alps further south along the great dividing range which I personally think is a fairly interesting part of the country as well, decent snowfall and occupies a fairly large area about the size of Switzerland
