Depends what you're doing.
If you want to measure angles and shit, the basic one won't do.
Because I'm really bad at accuracy pic related is the best for me to do that.
But you only need this if you go completely of trail and rely on course you've set.
Or if you're a scout and need to read the angles for sketches of the terrain or whatever.
For basic orientation in wilderness, any basic compass will do.
