So i went catfishing a week ago (channels) and i seemed to have a problem hooking the things as i caught one fish with 5 or 6 missed bites by the end of the night. I only caught the one because he swallowed the hook.
I was running two poles, I was holding one with a size 6 treble
and some punch bait and had another with a 2/0 octopus circle with some cut bait and a bell on the rod tip.
Both rods had 1oz egg sinkers and a carolina keeper in place of a swivel.
They would hit with a single small tap, but then nothing. I tried doing a 2-5 second count after this to set the hook on the pole i was holding, but they were gone.
The circle hook rod would get that same tap, and i know your supposed to let them run with it, but there was no activity after the initial tap. I tried to reel down on them, but there was only one instance where i think a fish actually had it but i think maybe i didn't apply enough pressure or something.
After thinking about it since my best guesses are too much weight, too small a circle hook, maybe using a j or kahle hook instead and holding both rods. Also thinking i should have set the hook as soon as i felt the tap.
Im going to go back out tomorrow night after work.
Any advice/ideas?
