While it's not something that most people would be willing to just toss in their pack and go with, there are people who do it with great results.

http://alexburkephoto.com/ he's a pretty /out/ tier dude who posts on /p/. He uses a view camera and hauls it out into the mountains of Colorado. You don't need a mule to haul one of these into the back-country.
