Seriously, maybe it's cause I'm from post-soviet state, and I'm "backwards", but untill recently literally nobody used any chemical or mechanical filters except for milliary that has huge purification plants mounted on trucks. It's a fucking meme gear that came from people who want your money.
Just fucking use a strainer with some material, coffee filters work great, than boil the shit out of it.
