Personally I haven't owned a shinano beyond one that was 30 years old and it worked until I slipped one rock broke its handle, and it kept working after I bolted a new handle to it. But as time goes on stuff stops being built to last. I've had a few abus and parts always start to go missing, but overall good quality. My daiwa is in a different price range than any other reels so I can't say. Lews seems to be behind the three I listed and I've never heard much about penn.
