I'm currently going for a bachelors of applied science in geomatics & mapping technology, and do surveying work over the summers for construction companies and coal mines and usually make pretty good money, usually $12-$15 per hour. It'll be $23-$27 per hour when I finish my degree and more certifications.
Basically our job is to make precise measurements to determine boundaries and provide data relevant to the shape and contour of the Earth's surface for engineering, mapping, and construction purposes, so you're outside most of the time. It's very refreshing.
