well i decided to do an experiment with my broken fly rod
>pic related, taken when it broke
it was a 9' 4 weight from cabelas. i decided not to cash in on the warranty and just buy a cabelas tlr4 weight on clearance for $30 and it is entirely worth the $120 if they're still in production, but back to my experiment
i had never used more than 3x tippet on my rod for fear of breaking the rod before the line, so i decided to put my frogging reel with 40 pound braid on it and see if i could make it fail. i tied it off to a tree and tightened my drag to all 12 pounds, and started pulling. much to my amazment, drag pulled before the rod broke. it was incredible to be using a 4 weight to pull 12 pounds of drag. i tried applying pressure to the spool with my thumb, and to snap it i had to give a sharp jerk, pulling the rod to almost a 180 degree bend before it broke in to 3 pieces. really helped me put in to perspective the strength of my gear, and if any of you have a broken rod, i reccomend trying it. you might be amazed at what a fishing rod can really handle.
