OP UPDATE- DISGRUNTLED EDITION
So I got my ass out to Pace Bend Park in Austin. The hiking was neat, and I tried out a hammock and tarp rig and that was comfy but goddamn it was fucking overrun. Never again. Really pretty unless you turned 90 degrees and saw a sprawling landscape conquered by hundreds of gigantic mansions. It was informative in that it told me that i really really want to hike into a place, throw up my hammock and eat some chow but goddamn i was burned by the sheer normie-ness of the whole thing. I'm a neophyte to this shit, but it wasn't exactly enchanting. "Primitive" should be taken with a grain of salt sometimes.
I'm learning guys, and I appreciate the input. when i called ahead to see what was what, ranger rick told me there was a fireban so i didnt bring firewood. Turns out that was bullshit. Neighbors didn't shut up until 1am and the patrol boat on the colorado adjacent was out almost as late. D- for Pace Bend. Gonna try Granger or Bastrop next. In the mean time I may just try to find places to hike nearby and just bring a meal and a ministove. Also tried some bushcrafty stuff with my Morakniv Companion Knife- really recommend it if anyone is looking for a cheap entry level knife.
