>>1877582He's an Orthodox Monastic (there aren't orders in Orthodoxy only separate patriarchates), Fr. Serpahim Rose was the founder of this particular Monastery in the late 60s. He was a convert while in graduate school and is one of the most recent/popular icons of Orthodoxy, he was ordained so he's not like a desert father or stylite relying on others for food and Communion. Orthodoxy actually has a pretty vibrant monastic community, and St. Herman's Monastery is famous for producing cult zines like Death to the World, and Fr. Seraphim Rose's books. They each made their own cabins, in a very ascetic manner obviously, but stocked with enough candles to scrawl books/translations in.
