its used to treat wood, but I put it on my blades as well, just take a kitchen towel, drop a bit of oil on it and then rub the oild on the blade
to be honest any oil or fat will do the job (f.e. mineral oil, butter, coconut fat etc..), but flax oil/linseed oil will stick really nicely to the blade and form a sort or rubbery film
pic related, you can see tiny particles stuck to the blade because they got stuck on the rubbery surface
this will protect the blade from rust, but you'll have to reapply the coating after heavy use
