Go with a Celestron Powerseeker 80eq if he decides to stick with the hobby he can always buy a dob later such a waste of money $300+ for a big bulky telescope that is gonna possibly end up taking up space around the house.
Small refractor like a Celestron Powerseeker is good for starting out.
And it's light weight.
I started out using that Powerseeker even did imaging using it.
A dob on the other hand trying image is a pain.
