My family has always had a wood stove and never a saw. We just cut down lots of dead trees on our property and split them with an axe. How easy it is really depends on the wood and what kind of axe you have. If you have the right axe, and a bunch of dead ash trees, it isn't that hard, but a bit time consuming.
