If you are looking for a single item that has a variety of capabilites I suggest looking into a small 10"/12" stainless wok. Single item that can carry water, make soup, and fry. All with a very small fire. They are basically meme tools in the modern home kitchen due to reasons but the wok was developed in basically an /out/ setting with the focus of fuel efficiency and versatility. Seems like a good match to me.

Yes it can make coffee. Instant or cowboy style.

I use a Pocket rocket knock off. Trioxane, alcohol, whatever you want is fine, but don't get a hobo stove where you gotta run around collecting twigs and feed it for half an hour to make some oatmeal.

For backpacking, I use MSR nesting aluminum pots, and an MSR Whisperlite. The Whisperlite doesn't simmer worth a shit. Been using a Sea to Summit Delta bowl for eating out of, and it's good- easy to clean, just wipe it out.

For car camping, my favorite stove is a single burner Coleman dual fuel. Simmers breddy gud. Pic related.

Woks pour well enough as is. If you were really worried about it I'm sure you could use a hammer/pliers to bend a small spout into the lip. I may actually do that to mine though now that you mention it. Shouldn't affect any of its other functions so would just be another positive attribute. I'm working on designing a kit around one but it's on the back burner till fall due to reasons. That's the real trick with a wok though is getting it to fit in well with the rest of your gear. Strapped to the outside works but it would be nice to put together some other items that would all nest and make a packable kit.

Presently, I just have an MSR stainless pot, a little insulated mug, and I cook on a penny stove I made.

Basically just a GSI Halulite and a Trangia stove. I have the Trangia as of Christmas, it's pretty nifty.

By the way, just a quick plug, Hill People Gear is bretty gud stuff, I have three of their products and love them. Not ultralight but it's built like a brick shithouse and it's efficient in design and features. Really versatile stuff and most of their bags can work together in some ways.

Either way check out some of their other videos too, really good info with comfy music and he isn't a sperg about it.

Also look at the TOAKS titanium stuff. They have some modular kit available that you can buy piecemeal; ie, a cup that will nest to the bottom of a Klean Kanteen type stainless water bottle, or will also nest inside of a separate pot depending on what you want to carry.

A separate pot will let you heat food and also have a hot drink, whereas going with the cup only will save space and weight, but you have to have your hot drink after cooking, eating, and cleaning the cup.

I make mountain meatloaf sometimes, but it's heavy and perishable.

1.5 ground beef, .75 crumbs, cheese, onion, Rosemary, thyme. Make a 3-4" diameter log. Wrap it all up in 5-6 layers of foil. 30-45 min on coals, turning frequently.

I just use a regular burner with those campingaz cannisters. Its meh and i want to buy a whisperlite so i'm saving for that.

I like making oatmeal for breakfast. Super easy, cooks in the bag. You can make it tasty too.

Lunch is usually quesadillas, or fish if I catch one.

Pasta makes a good dinner.

Spices are my best friend, lightweight and can make things tasty. I'm parish to lemon pepper, goes good on my trout and pasta.

For proteins I'll take dried beans and soak them overnight. Summer sausage works great too, and of course jerky for a quick snack on the go.

What do you guys like to take?

This is actually a pretty nifty idea for a perishable camp meal. Next time get a bigger coal bed and bury it in them so you don't have to keep turning it. I will probably make this for people on the next casual camp I go on. Pairs well with potatoes and corn on the cob in the fire as well I would imagine. Keeps mess down and can avoid packing pots and pans. Thanks for the idea. Wish I had a meal to share but I'll just repost my favorite bar recipe.

2 parts pitted dates
1 part walnuts
1 part almonds
1 part dried cranberries
1 lemon

Mince dates. Finely grind walnuts. Coarsely grind almonds. Zest and juice lemon. Combine all with the cranberries. Lightly grease an appropriate sized baking tray and evenly spread the mixture to a depth of approximately 1/2" - 3/4" (depends on how moist you want final version). Bake at 280 until browned to personal perfection. Let cool. Cut bars. Wrap and store. Still figuring out shelf life but it's months at least if refrigerated and I've kept some in my car for about a month and they were still prefect when I ate them.

An alternative recipe replaces the cranberries with dried apple, the lemon with a splash of apple juice, and adds cinnamon to taste.

Anyways have a somewhat stupid question to ask: if I use my cast iron skillet over the fire will it change it or mar it in any way? I know it can handle it just fine, just curious if the fire/smoke will turn the skillet a weird color or make it taste like smoke. Have been working on flavoring the thing for years now and don't want to ruin it by taking it cat camping. Wok is an interesting idea.

Really don't think a multi item kit is useful. Basically just need a water boiling container and a utensil. I have a few different pots for different types camping.trips.

Open Country 2L stainless steel pot + lid

Make your own dehydrated meals. Chili, curry, soups/stews, making your own minute rice+beans. Either buy a dehydrator or make your own (pretty easy desu) and make whatever you want. If on a longer trip, don't add fats/oils of any kind, and bring along a couple sticks of butter/lard to add while cooking. That shit's so calorie dense sherpas use it, so no complaints.

SS tin with folding handle (heatproof) and one layer dish that sits in it which I use as a plate, but am considering cutting holes in because the lid is OK as a plate

got a little folding knife and a spoon

going to buy a fuel stove or make one out of a can, because nobody out here sells gas
going to have to use wood a lot of the time

I have a cup for mixing whiskey/rum/moonshine and coke to add a measure of respectability (instead of drinking out of my pot)

also getting a roll of tinfoil, to solar evaporate water or collect steam, or collect rain
also for coal roasting, not sure if a fried egg would stick to them
can always use it as a prep surface; shit you can fold a pot out of it if you want
disposable, but super light; great for making char cloth too

for all their flaws I'd get a trangia though

Are there any /out/ recommended burners? My local outdoors shop advised me liquid fuel is probably better than gas, because it's easier to come by, cooks quicker, usable in more versatile conditions, etc.
But all the liquid fuel burners they showed (which would also work with gas) were upwards of 200 bucks.

Are there any more affordable options? Would gas be a bad choice, per se?

knowing exactly how much I have, and the lower cost sell it to me
there are some safety benefits in separating your burner totally from your fuel reservoir too

I also like that if my liquid fuel stove was damaged I could improvise one easily (basement dwellers can stove)

in parts of the world where they don't camp, gas canisters are virtually non-existant, but usually you can get them in major cities albiet at a cost

gas is really light to carry though, I have one of >>1013422 type burners and it's pretty neat
packing out the empty cans can be a pain, but in some places I'm comfortable just littering them and picking up a bunch of plastic bottles to take out instead

in china I walked the leaping tiger gorge, it was only a day hike but really worth it.
but there were heaps of super geared up hikers doing it, and with them came a thousand plastic bottles

to be fair though I've seen more accidents with liquid fuel stoves where someone has
A. spilled fuel on the stove, then connected it and lit it anyway

It seems the main problem for you would be the fact that these canisters are pressurized. That's something you won't be able to do using diesel from your truck tank. However, if you just need a multi-fuel stove using canisters then any of those in the link will work just fine for you.

A few weeks ago I made a thread about how to use a public grill with charcoal. Got told it was easy. I watched a video where a lady used an egg carton to like her coals. I tried it this past weekend and couldnt get the coals hot. Luckily the fire pit had a grill welded on so we used that.

I guess in the future I'll invest in a chimney starter.
