Hey /out/, need some advice. I'm prepping for an A.T. thru-hike, and per recommendations, got myself a set of the ultralight frogg toggs. Then found out on a practice hike that they tear if you look at them funny.

I'm prepping to buy a sturdier suit when I had a thought- I know it'll be raining like mad, but how important are rain pants to go with my rain jacket? Will I regret just getting a sturdy jacket to save money?

A jacket is nice, yeah. In my opinion for legs it'll just keep too much moisture inside and then you'll just be wet anyways. So like I said, underlayers that are water resistant with quick drying pants.

I'm not sure what the temps are going to be like. When it's warm I don't bother with rain trousers. Once it gets colder I wear them for the wind protection and to keep as much water out of my boots/shoes as possible. Gortex is solid but pricer. The thicker H2No materials are tough as well. And both breath pretty well.

If you go cheap on a tougher jacket you're just going to sweat enough to not need a rain jacket. It's worth saving and getting decent kit. Also have a look at your other layers and try to get the fastest drying stuff you can. That way when it does stop raining at least you dry off and warm up as fast as possible.
I spend a lot of time hiking in Wales and Scotland so know all about rain!

lots of people who go with froggtoggs will get the laminated "active" version for durability. it's maybe an ounce or two heavier than the single layer version and much tougher

the poncho is very airy, and fits over my pack too so less weight to carry. it also costs $90 less than the marmot so when it does rip, i am not sad.

Fix it with tape and stop crying; lots of people use frogg toggs on the AT and dont wear them out too fast.

frogg toggs rule. they can get steamy especially when youre starting this late and will be in VA in peak heat. Honestly if its super hot and rainy i dont even bother with a jacket a lot of times tho. for 18 bucks and 5oz frogg toggs cant be beat. you can fix with duct tape. you can buy a new pair along the trail. They dont absorb water so wont wet out and work great as a hard shell paired with a fleece when the wind/cold picks us.

either throw out the pants or cut them into pic related (but rotate 90 degrees) for a rain skirt. they will shred the first day it rains if you walk with them as designed. most people even dont bother with rain pants/skirt
