hiking to the top of a mountain=/=mountaineering.

"peakbagging" is what you're looking for. mountaineering includes technical rock, ice, and/or snow travel.

The best thing you can do is practice, or do some other cardio. Practice is everything though. Even if you're physically capable of doing a climb, there's no substitute for experience, which comes from that practice.
Also there are different definitions of course, but I'd say mountaineering starts at 8,000 ft, or where you need to start using special gear/techniques.
