Keep a clear calm mind, take small problems on as they come it is easy to get overwhelmed when you worry about everything at once. All the goodies in the world will not keep you alive unless you want to live and know how to use them. Things people forget or do not think about are as follows: a plan of where you are going and what you will do, dedicated multiple route evacuation plan with fall back points, personal information and money medications if needed, a wool blanket, spare fuel oil water and tools for your vehicle, comfortable shoes, Means of communication and information to know what is going on (phone and radio along with a way to power or recharge them), a medical kit, clothing and a bag that blends in with you surroundings and lets others perceive you as ill equipped and less of a threat.
In my experience the best strategy is to know and practice skills before you need them reading a book on how to swim is not much help when the ship is going down and knowing you can do something is less likely to place doubt and fear in you head than something you have done before and are confident you can do again this works from everything from starting a fire to catching and cooking food.
A few tidbits from my grandfather who worked in civil defense are as follows:
When a mandatory evacuation is called it is generally too late to leave.
When you are told to relocate to a location head the opposite direction.
When you hear don't worry that is the time to worry.
When you hear we are here to help, keep a straight face and bite your lip.
If placed in with a large group guard your stuff and personal hygiene is paramount.
Individuals can be intelligent, in large groups however bedlam ensues.
