Come hang out in the pipe general thread with us. You can talk cigars there too.
I like to bring a pipe. I typically bring at least two tobacco selections since I like choices. But if I had to pick JUST two out of my current selection, I would take some Frog Morton and some Peterson Old Dublin. Dunhill's Durbar is a nice smoke too though, as is Old Dark Fired. But that Frog Morton is a prime /out/ tobacco I think.
Why a pipe?
1. Properly packed you're not looking at a lot of space or weight, and frankly it's just durable. Pipe, tobacco, pipe nail (for tamping) and a lighter which you need anyway. No humidor needed, just keep your bag of tobacco wrapped up tight.
2. It's a relaxing activity, and it's as tremendous and complex a hobby as you want it to be.
3. You don't inhale a pipe so your lungs are safe, and cancer rates are almost negligible, especially for the 'once or twice a week' category like I fall in to. And actually, the most valid long term study on pipe-related mortality found that pipe smokers, on average, live slightly _longer_ than people who do not smoke a pipe. Statistically insignificant but still interesting at any rate.
4. It's nostalgic, and iconically /out/ as fuck.
You can try it for pretty cheap, and it's basically impossible to become addicted to tobacco via pipe, so don't be afraid to try it.
