Although the difference isn't technically what species, its the reason for the attack.
If they're attacking because they feel threatened or think you're threatening their cubs or something then playing dead is generally better than trying to fight it.
But if they're trying to eat you playing dead obviously won't work.
Also black bears are more skittish so acting scary is more likely to work than on a grizzly, because they know they don't really have anything to worry about unless you're also a grizzly, which you probably aren't

Keep facing it and back away, and avoid eye contact.
If the choice is fight or run obviously try running first though. The bear can probably outrun you but I'd wager most people's odds are better in a race than a fight.
The best defense is good situational awareness, backed up by a gun.
