Wood treatment/finish for wooden utensils

Hello,

I've recently gotten into making wilder-spoons for my travels innawoods, but am unsure as to how to finish the wood in a way that is both safe and leaves an appealing shine to the wood.

Linseed oil, walnut oil, beeswax, tung oil, carnauba wax are all good for food safe finishes.

Beeswax then tung oil may give a glossy finish.

Try many combinations of substances until you find one which suits your liking..

What this anon said but be careful to use actual tung oil. Many cans of what you see at Home Depot just say "tung oil finish" and do not contain tung oil, these are not suitable for your purposes

Same for linseed oil.

Actual linseed oil is foodsafe and sold as flaxseed oil in supermarkets.
Boiled Linseed Oil contains drying agents and is not foodsafe.

The best solution is to just use olive oil or mineral oil.

Start with less porous woods such as cherry, maple, birch, white oak, or beech, those are both more water resistant and easy to clean, as well as easier to fill the grain and get a shine.

Salad bowl finish is often recommended for wooden food utensils but I haven't tried it, it looks nice. I've had good luck with beeswax melted into either mineral oil or walnut oil then buffed into the wood until it's saturated.
