Wouldn't really wear them /out/ though, canvas soaks up water and is heavy. If durability is your main concern, go canvas. If you're willingness to sacrifice a bit of durability for lightweight, comfortable, water repellant pants, buy some cheap nylon ripstop hiking pants. Got a pair of baggy Patagonia pants for $5 at goodwill a few months ago and they're amazing for everything besides working construction.
