Also gas is expensive, but engines are more efficient, and distances shorter, so it evens out in the end.
I use around €200 a month in diesel and my engine is running at least 12 hours a day.
For normal commuting I can make €20 last a week or more.
Road tax, inspections and insurance are still a major expense though. Especially for someone who doesn't use a car much.
You can insure and tax a 1998 1.3L piece of shit for less than €400 a year almost anywhere.
In regards to flying, the cost is always higher than price of the flight itself, sometimes substantially.
If you fly Ryanair, prices are cheap only when you book months in advance so it doesn't apply for spontaneous or business travel.
And Ryanair mostly works out of piece of shit rural airports where transport infrastructure is sparse.
And the flight times are practically designed to get you to stay overnight so you have to pay for a Hotel too.
If you're a business traveler, or a family/group a car is almost always a better idea. Also road trips are fun and way less stressful.
