If you want clear saltwater you'll have to go at least to Mustang Island close to Corpus Christi, and the further south you go the clearer it'll get Matagorda seems to be the hotspot for trophy size trout, but the water is a lot muddier.
Oh and I guess one more thing I should mention is people generally love to talk down here, so expect to other anglers to start a conversation with you every now and then. And everyone seems to openish about what lures have been working for them so don't be afraid to ask.

Your story reminds me of this spot by the lake where there's a set of ruts about 30 yards long people always run through when it rains. Without fail theres always someone in a stock truck that tries to go through it, bottoms out, and completely fucks their truck pulling it out.
Saw one dude that tore his exhaust off when he was pulled out.
