Wasn't one in the Catalog and I had a question

I've got a decent hammock, tested it out when I was in Arapho and it was so damn relaxing. I want to take it with me and hammock camp for the first time this winter. I have a zero-degree rated bag, and plan on sleeping with my coat and all that on of course, so if I don't have an underquilt, would that work out just fine? I imagine a suitable setup would be

no. any insulation compressed underneath your weight will be compromised. buy a ccf pad for all of 5 bucks and be done with it.

not effective in this application, and certainly not as a regular use item. moisture barrier also.

You will never be as cold in all your life if you try winter hammock camping with a sleeping bag.

Insulation under you is absolutely 100% needed in a hammock. Sleeping bags only inslute the top of you. When you lay on the sleeping bag, your weight compresses the insulation. Insulation only works when it traps air, laying on it prevents that since your weight compresses the space where the air should have been trapped.

It's why underquilts exist.

You can also use a pad in a hammock, but they slide around alot, and aren't the easiest to stay on top of if you move around at all.

If you're winter camping you'll want a large tarp that can block most all of the wind. Or use a hammock sock with a smaller tarp.

Underground quilts has a tarp sale going on now. They're great tarps.

Yeah OP I've done my share of coll weather and wintering in a hammock and I have to say, you just won't sleep a wink if you don't have an underquilt or an insulating pad. I personally use an underquilt because it's most appopriate for a hammy and won't pose an comfort issues. Plus once you settle into the hammock it cocoons around you and even in winter well below freezing i'm able to sleep without a top layer because it's so warm.

So yyyyyeah brah, I recommend an underquilt. You won't make it without proper insulation under you.

Just get a pad or an underquilt.

I get cold booty in anything lower than 45ºF at night. It's a very easy thing to fix with a sleeping mat, be it simple CCF or a nice insulated one. This easy fix is the defining factor between a cozy night's sleep and wanting to call your 3 day trip off after the first night.

So I'm trying to keep bulky items to a minimum, ie bags for holding shit. So if I get a winter underquilt, would toting my zero degree sleeping bag with me be necessary?

Depends how cold m80. If you're talking about 0ºC then you can just bring an udnerquilt and a fleece or whool blankey. If you're talking more like 0ºF you might need more of an overlayer. The thing with hammocking with an underquilt is that your top layer can be quite small, a sleeping bag is overkill because it's redundant. Don't know what to tell ya brah.

I would recommend some practice runs innacold so you can get an idea of what works for you

The gold standard of hammock insulation is a top quilt and underquilt.

Those 2 items together, are essentially a sleeping bag.

To save money, just get a ccf sleeping pad and use the sleeping bag for now, until you have enough for a proper underquilt and top quilt combo.

You cant really find many for under $100

The absolute best under $100 is a hammock gear econ Phoenix 40 for $90. You'll need a pad under your feet though since it's 3/4 length. The full length econ incubator from hammock gear is only a little over $100

If you wanna go super cheap, get a snugpak underblanket. Heavy, but it's good to freezing temps and can be found under $50.

You can also make your own with a kit from ripstopbytheroll.com for about $

A pluq is easy to make, pic related, and can cost about $40 total.

What would be the cheapest one I could get then for good quality?

I did some searching and ENO has one for $99 and another for $130. They seem to have good reviews but I heard from another hammock thread that ENO is shit so I'm a bit skeptical.

Not him but I have the Snugpak and I've never lookedbak. Apparently it's supercheep and heavy but I paid like $100 and my experience with it is absolutely glorius. Down to a bit below freezing (20ºF)

Just watched a few reviews and the jungle hammock plus underblanket are looking good.

The snugpak is also not that light, but for the price it's very good.

The hammock gear econ line of quilts are game changers. They aren't super cjeap, but they are way cheaper than compatible products. A typical down underquilt will cost you $200-250+, you can get a hammock gear econ incubator for $120.

Woot.com runs sales of hammock stuff about once a month. Keep checking back. They usually will have a nice 10ft hammock with bug net for like $30. Sometimes will have a Yukon tarp for $18.

You won't really be any more flat in a blackbird than any other high quality hammock. As long as you lay in a hammock ckrrectlt, you should be pretty flat.

Warbonnet makes top notch stuff, some of the best in the world really. Def not a meme.

If I was getting a blackbird, id get the XLC. It is a little longer and will give you more room.

While I agree with you, it's way more of an ordeal to either ruin a sleeping bag with a hole or sew a closable hole into a sleeping bag than to just go to the store and pay $40 for a sleeping pad to chuck in the hammock, or just buy an underquilt. Assuming he only owns one sleeping bag and he ends up ruining it, it's going to be cheaper in the long run to put up for the damn underquilt to begin with.

Peapods work but aren't the greatest. They can constrict movement and impede on your diagonal lay.

They are also hard to cinch up enough to block drafts if you have a longer hammock.

In very cold weather though, they can be a great supplement to a TQ and UQ.

From my experience with the Smokies, you are going to want a decent tarp and a mosquito net with that hammock. Temp wise? depends on elevation, but I would bring a light sleeping bag if possible, just in case the wind starts whipping up. Have a great time!

I'm debating between a hennessy hammock and something like pic related for a universal lightweight sleeping solution.
If I need to do ground setup for the hammock knowing rainy weather is afoot, what should I do? run a tarp under? Or is the material on the bottom fine as is?

Depends what you find more comfortable.

Hammocks are about comfort, not necessarily reducing weight. A typical hammock set up is a lot lighter than a cheap tent set up, but once you get into more expensive tents and tarp tents, the weight difference is shrunk.

If you ever needed to go to ground in a hammock, you would just set up your tarp, and sleep under it. You'd have to use a sleeping pad instead of an underquilt.

For me, I live and camp in the northeast USA. There is never, ever ,ever an area without trees, so I never need to go to ground. Depending on your area, you may find the same.

Hennessey hammocks are alright, but I think warbonnet is better. Their blackbird XLC would be my choice.

Seconding what this guy says. Hennessey is great if you are new to hammocking because it is idiot-proof, literally everything you need out of the box with the suspension already set to go, Warbonnets not as 'fool-proof' because you still need a tarp, bugnet, suspension, and ridgeline depending on what you buy it's more expensive but it's also better quality and their hammocks are longer so you'll sleep flatter.

I have a hennessey and I would recommend it to others however it makes me claustrophobic, and because the bugnet is so close to you, it sounds like the mosquitoes are trapped in their with you and then I'm paranoid that bugs are biting me all night long so I start to itch everywhere just listening to them and then I can't sleep at all. This might not be a problem for you though I live near a swamp so that's where I camp.
>I'm going to DIY another hammock and get a giant bugnet with a thousand guy lines to go over it. Fuck bugs.

It can't get here fast enough, I wanna go out and not feel claustrophonic like I'm in one big ripstop burrito, or just bring along my hammock car camping and not worry about the stupid bugnet, have a convenient suspension without having to completely tear apart my henessey.

A lot of hammix have removeable bugnets. My DD bugnet it attached by a zipper. It's great in winter to be able to just lie out in the open air and look up at the stars
