So... is NOLS just a meme? I've done two courses with them (backpacking and WFR,) and the instructors always bug the shit out of me. I feel like it's just a waste of money if you don't take one through a university.

If you want to work as an outdoor guide, NOLS is a great way to get experience.

I've always wanted to guide rivers, but I feel that there is a degree of arrogance that NOLS instructors have about outdoor recreation and medicine. I wouldn't want to be indoctrinated into guiding the way they are. They have all been nice, and they do know a lot, but they are also stubborn about listening to things that have been taught differently to other people by other groups. I do respect the organization, though.

You don't necessarily need them to get the experience to become a river guide. Most river guides I know are hired on with no experience, and learn on the job. I guide rafting trips for my university in the Southwest, and I got my foot in the door in other ways. However, and education from NOLS is world renowned, and recognized by all major guiding companies.
