Wetterfleck

Robes made from loden (densly woven wool) which are quite popular with hunters in southern Germany.

Warm, durable and if you take the tight weave, very water resitant. They double as blanket.

Only downside is that they are pretty expensive.

What do you think? Great gear or not?

seems pretty sensible and utilitarian
how much do they weigh though?
I have a really nice, and expensive, double layer heavy wool jacket (Filson Double Mackinaw)
its pretty awesome but it weighs alot compared to modern alternatives

They're cool but I don't think the value outweighs the cost, for me, I'm a poorfag. Some other options to consider would be a Swanndri bush shirt from NZ, which are typically a good bit cheaper if you get them from a retailer and not their website.

I think these are worthwhile outerwear. They are good for keeping you dry, warm and even clean. I have never worn one, but they were popular in past centuries for a reason.

They seem like they'd get caught on absolutely everything. Maybe they're okay for fairly open woods but they'd be useless in anything thicker.

If I was spending that much money I'd probably pick up a decent mid layer fleece and one of Swazi's hunting jackets instead. My father only just replaced his old Goretex Swazi last year because it started leaking a bit, and he used and abused it for 10-15 years.

These are traditional hunting clothes (but some of the people wearing them today are wearing them to LARP a traditional hunter for sure).

These are not blanket wool, but very densely woven and felted. They also don't snag much because of that.

These here are costly even by german standards, but the old fudds have the money. You could probably make one for some 50 € in china, but... yeah.
>Use
It's short term rain protection and a sitting blanket. The wool doesn't make noise, which can be important for hunting. It's not hiking gear. Hunters are still arguing how useful they are, but they probably have their reasons for it.
