So far the Victorinox Forester and Victorinox Hunter look like good options. What are your opinions? Any other recommendations?

The Forester's dedicated can opener is a lot easier to use than the combination can and bottle opener on the Hunter. You can also use it to skin oranges, and it has a finer screwdriver tip.

With the stated requirements, a Leatherman weighs twice as much, has a shorter blade, and IMO lower manufacturing quality (higher tolerances).

Seconded. I have always been disappointed with their product, I'm too much used to Victorinox quality.

Also, Wenger OP. It's been bought by Victorinox, and their knives are now pretty much the same, save for a few things specific to each brand, like the tools.

The major difference for "modern" SAK is that the blade is unlocked by pushing the Wenger logo. Also, I'm not sure many tools come with a lock; my own favorite Victorinox knife, the Dual Pro, can lock three tools: the blade, the saw, and the bottle opener/large screwdriver.

Depends on what else you need. I personally carry a Leatherman Wave for the pliers and small phillips screwdriver, and all locking tools. But if it's just a locking blade, saw, and can opener that you need OP, then the Victorinox Forester will perform swimmingly.

The Wenger lock-blades are HUGE. Absolutely dwarf the Victorinox ones.

If it's going in your truck or something or you're +6'4" the Wenger, otherwise it's just too big/heavy for anyone.

Keep in mind the Victorinox is already full-size. The Wenger is just stupid large imo. Also imo the victorinox reverse-liner-lock is safer if less tacticook than the Wenger button.

It's a bit longer, but hardly THAT longer. To better appreciate the difference, Victorinox knives have a 111 mm blade, and Wenger have a 130 mm blade.

Though I myself have large hands (well, I've seen larger too), and the Wenger suits better in my hand. The Victorinox handle is almost too small for me.

This model is still in production and there are plenty available, but the price is just atrociously high for some reason.

You wouldn't believe how many people collect SAKs in Germany. It's easily the most-collected knife. So Vic and Wenger can get away with producing special editions in low numbers for a ridiculous price, knowing there will be enough people who buy it just to have a complete collection.

Finally after years of hurting my fingers and struggling at various tasks while trying to use the various "tools" included with my knives, I said fuck it. Nowadays if I need a saw I use an actual saw, a screwdriver? I use an actual fucking full size screwdriver. I keep tool kits in my house, car and garage and bring one with me camping.

The only knife I carry no is a classic Buck 110. All I need and want out of a knife is a good solid lockblade with a sharp edge. No gimmicky bullshit. The only thing I don't like about the 110 is the lack of clip and thumbstud. But I have seen some people attach clips and thumbstuds to their 110's. That is something I have been meaning to try.

If you really need pliers, not everyone does.

And even then, I prefer to carry actual pliers myself along with my couteau suisse. Because when I need my pliers, I often need it to use it along with other tools. A single multitool is nice, but being able to use only one at a time sucks.

On topic, I was recently shopping for a knife similar to what OP was looking for, and was baffled that Victorinox apparently doesn't sell any one-handed models with non-serrated blades. Ended up with a smaller model after my interest in minimalism won over my interest in big knives.

Pic related, there are only three right now with a non serrated blade, and these are fairly recent. There are new knives coming soon, may only be a few weeks before more models come, and we can hope for more non-serrated blades.

Though I second above post, those blades are very good as long as you don't plan on using them for woodworking. Though they're only partially serrated, there's still a regular blade at the bottom.

from personal experience- i wouldn't go as far as to saying it's a gimmick. they can cut certain things easier than a plain blade, but i feel that serrated blades are more of a specialty tool than a normal-use type

unless you're a sharpening guru, you won't be getting that edge back

OK, so I was perhaps wrong for saying it's a gimmick. But since serrations are at the part of the blade needed for certain types of work due mostly to mechanical advantage (less leverage against the wrist for some things), serrations eliminate the ability to do those things well.

Also, show me any plain bladed knife with a proper edge which cannot slice through the majority of ropes used while camping without a problem.

There's just no real use for a serrated knife for most folks, and almost everyone I've known who carries one ends up using the plain end of the blade, and cursing the serrated end for getting in the way.

The people I've known with full or partially serrated knives who say they enjoy them are also the people who throw away a perfectly good knife for getting dull because "it can't cut now."

This is, of course, 'normal' folks, and not the niche serrations are meant for.
