Just for shits and giggles, tried to see if I can fit my 10 day summer load into a 40l pack... took some strapping but dammit I can, and it's pretty comfortable too. Considering taking this on my upcoming 10day instead of my High Sierra 45L

here is everything that was in/strapped to the pack in the first picture. I added extra clothing than what I would normally pack to make up for not having my foodbags and other etc. around right this second. Believe it or not, I still had plenty of room with all this in a 40l pack.

walked in wanting to pick up the GSI Pinnacle Soloist cookset... Walked out with the Ketalist. I boiled up a pot of tea on my penny stove right when I got home.

My whole cook-kit, towel, fuel, bug-dope, sunscreen et. al fit inside, and it is stupidly light.

Never shopped at a MEC, but I can say that every piece of REI branded gear I've used has been very good for the price. They are especially a good bargain in tents and packs.

REI is usually slightly more expensive than other places, but you pay more because you get pretty much the best return policy ever... I have returned tents with huge holes in them obviously from fire, they just raised their eyebrows and credited me the purchase price

In addition to hiking, backpacking and camping, I also use mine to haul around my photo/video equipment.

And it's just under 22 inches long, so it'll fit carry-on as well.

Where are the big REI stores in the US? I've been to the one in Manhattan and it pales in comparison to MEC in Toronto (or Calgary, etc).

I'm assuming however the REI in Portland or wherever woodsy is godly.

There are four "Flagship" stores. Seattle, Denver, Bloomington MN and Manhattan. These are the "fuckin' huge" type stores.

Portland is a "big" store (multi-story, full shop services, meeting rooms).

Then there's a couple of different medium and small REI layouts which usually satellite around the big stores. They carry basic inventory, have limited shop services, no meeting rooms, etc.
