/out/ please tell me about carrying food into the wilderness.

Currently ive been taking off the shelf things like jerky and soups for quick meals on day hikes and such. What annoys me is having to pack out empty cans, sticky bags, unsealable drink containers that filthy up everything else in my bag.

Food storage? Food prep? Menu items? Food sanitation? Tell ke everythi g i need to know about how to eat on a hike.

Bump. This is a dilemma I've been facing too. I wanna bring foods in, but I don't wan't to carry a bunch of trash. Thought about suing cloth to wrap some foods but I don't really know anything else.

My best idea is some kind of nesting set of tupperware. But I only carry a small assault pack and tupperware seems to domestic. Not operator at all.

Back when I had a source of MREs from my unit I would just burn the trash. But I realized that ash is still litter.

As for trash take foods out of their original plastic bags and put them in a hankerchief or something.

Also my weeaboo friend suggested a bento. Apparently the box is compact and japanese food is full of noodles and protine.

The point was to reduce having to carry trash out of the wilderness.

Not suggest what currently everyone already does.

As for garbage reduction, pack stuff in in ziplock bags, with just enough pasta/rice/whatever for the number of people at that meal, and do the same for anything else-veggies, whatever, then you just have the bags to carry out, as opposed to lots of trash.

If you're not going for re-usability, use those clear bags you get at bulk sections of the supermarket (no idea what they're called), they're lighter, and you can just tear them open.

Also, carry things like sauces, spices in a reusable container, with just enough for the trip in it. Little squeeze bottles work well for sauces, Tabasco is a godsend on trail.

Dry snacks and such can be put in wax paper envelopes, which are nice because they're lightweight and can be used as tinder in a pinch.

Also, get over your aversion to tupperware, it can be awesome.

If you can pack it in, you can pack it out.
Or wrap all your stuff in paper (protip: bread stays edible for a long time that way, cause it won't mold) and burn it in your camp fire.

Nalgene travel toiletry bottles are awesome for that particular use.

Kinda depends on how long I'm going to be out for, but I try to keep it pretty basic.

Cured meats, cheese, various types of trail mix, soup mix, oatmeal, fresh veggies if it's a day hike or a short packing trip.

I've got a press mug, so sometimes I'll bring a little coffee along.

I try to avoid a lot of sugary food, though I might bring a little chocolate just for a treat, and I reserve the saltier stuff for later in the day to conserve water and replace whatever I sweat out on the hike.

Related note. A customer recently asked me what I thought the best new product of the year has been and without hesitation or reservation I answered Oberto Bacon Jerky.

There's nothing wrong with trying to eat as well as possible in all circumstances. No, that doesn't mean no fat before you go off on one, it means exactly what it says.
