Hey /out/, how's it going?
I've got a few questions - specifically for Americans here.
The situation is, there is a chance that in August I'll be going to America for 3 weeks, hiking/trekking/mountaineering from Yosemite National Park across the High Sierra, around 220 miles finishing in San Marino. So, has anyone here ever been in Yosemite? What's it like? Scenery, weather, terrain, wildlife, wardens? I had a look on the website, and they like to mention the black bears there, will they be an issue? What's the country like between the park and the end of the trek? Any recommendations to stop at along the way? I really want to experience America (Brit here - only been to the Lake District, Brecon and the Highlands). So, yeah, what's it like?

Take a bear box, keep it a decent distance from your camp, keep your food in it, and bears won't bug you. They're not a threat to you if you take the recommended safety precaution.

Yosemite can get crowded during the summer, but there are good reasons that tourists flock to it--it's gorgeous. There's also plenty of back-country that you can backpack in, if that's more your thing.

During August, it'll get hot. The scenery is beautiful and there's wildlife to see. Are you getting a chance to see anything else? California has amazing scenery, and there are a ton of beautiful places besides Yosemite. I don't have too many good recommendations there, because I only do the big, obvious, touristy stuff when I visit it. But a little further south along the Eastern Sierra Nevadas, or along the California coast, and there are plenty of great, out of the way spots that you can visit. But if you are looking for an American experience, I think that the touristy parts of Yosemite might be pretty satisfying, to you.

Thar be ticks that late in the year around there? In the BC interior they are all gone by August.

If you want to do any if the famous hikes but a ticket early. They added a ticket system (they are only $5) so that the saddle of half dome and a few other places would not over crowd. When I was 10 I did the hike to the top of half dome and it was horrifyingly packed. People who were to impatient to use the cable system just walked up the side with no safety equipment. A lot of people die doing this.

Bears aren't a big deal, I've been within 15 feet of a black bear but it didn't really care about us as long as we remained quiet. Deer have virtually no fear of people so they will get really close to you, but don't touch them.

Also one last thing, on the hike up Sierra falls my dad and I put a big rock with some inscriptions on it, for our friend Ernie who had a heart attack in 2004. We check up on it every couple years but last year we couldn't find it. It was originally a little off the beaten path, but if you see it, can you make a post on here. It's a far fetched request but it would mean a lot.

Sounds ace, thanks for the detailed response. We should get to see a lot of places, I'm not 100% on the details yet - it's part of a military adventure training exercise, but the opportunity of a lifetime. 3 weeks in the US of A! The stops and places we see will probably be dictated by my seniors. And the backpacking sounds awesome, thanks again for the input.

Ah, that's a good idea, thanks man. I had an insect repellant in summer 2011 for midges in Wales and I shit you not whatever was in it melted my watch.
