You know what we don't have in the catalog? A mofuggin' tent thread.

I'll be making my purchase sometime within the next few days. I have a budget of $200 and I'm looking for all the obvious characteristics like lightness, packability, etc etc. Camping will mostly be done in the SE United States so no "four-season" business is really that necessary. I've been looking at two-person tents more and more so I can maybe use it with my fiance in the future and to give myself a little extra room for gear, a dog, whatever.

I've been hammock-camping for a few years, but the missus might be slowly joining me on my trips. Additionally, I'd like the choice of bringing a tent or a hammock (or even both, since the hammock weighs almost nothing) and sometimes it's good to have somewhere to move around while it's raining or whatever.

I would not roll it up in it's sleeve to pack it. What I do is what my outfitters taught me to do:

>fold undertarp put flat in bottom of pack.
>cram rainfly in bag on top of under tarp without bothering to fold, just loose.
>cram tent in on top of rainfly without bothering to fold just loose.
>punch it down in there.
>nestle compresses sleeping bag on top of it and then start cramming all your other stuff around and on sleeping bag.
>attach tent poles to outside of pack.
Personally, I made a black duck cloth sleeve for the tent poles and tied turks head knots around it and sewed them in place with a couple loops of thread. Holds them real tight and clean looking. People ask me what it is sometimes and when I tell them a sleeve I made for my tent poles they go, "Oh neat."

I don't think 6x22 is too big really. You'll have to bivvy to get too much smaller.

If you must, I don't use a stuff sack for the tent. The method described with a tent the size of 6x18.5, takes up the bottom 4 inches of my pack like a foundation.

I'm just afraid of the tent getting damaged from packing it loosely with all my other things, though I can't think of anything I keep in the main compartment that would damage it. Peace of mind and practice sackcrafting, I guess.

That looks like a solid choice. How tall/big are you and how well do you fit inside? Do you think it has any significant advantages over the Mountainsmith in my OP?

I'm 5'11" and I can definitely fit in it comfortably. My girlfriend is about 5'6" and there's enough room for us both to have our sleep pads side by side easily. The vestibules are also very nice for keeping packs.

^I think Coleman gets overlooked a lot because they make some cheap stuff. People don't realize they also make some very nice stuff. I came across this searching Coleman on Amazon. Don't know much about it. Looks interesting.

That's a little much for a 2-person, don't you think? Though I guess for that price you can't complain. Honestly I think it'd be really hard for me to get over the "coleman=cheap" mental block.

I don't think you can get a good tent form a shitty brand. IF you want light, as in less than 4lbs for a 2P you're gonna be spending a lot as well. Alps gear is absolute shit in my experience, it's like buying Starter shoes and expecting them to hold up like a good pair of Brooks or Salomons.

Marmot has excellent 2P tents that come with footprints. They aren't super light, but I wouldn't count them as heavy. You can usually find year old models cheap as well.

Check out Golite. They get overlooked too often, they make incredible gear at very good prices. They just restocked their tents. Their UL tent has little to no vestibule, but is under 4lbs and is only $250.

I have used Nemo tents, a bit too small and too expensive but really light. I have the Big Agnes Copper Spur 2 which is perfect, very light and spacious with big vestibules. I got a great deal on it too.

That previously mentioned Mtn. Hardware tent looks like it's on the same level as the Marmot ones so I'd say it's prob a good one.

i see no significant difference between the tents in the op and the mountain hardwear. i'm thinking you're just saying that based off the brand.

I think it is more accurate to say that most Coleman products are "casual" rather than "cheap". I've owned many pieces of Coleman gear and have found most of them to be well made and of good quality, but most of their products are for casual use; things like car camping not things like extreme mountaineering. .

That's probably more accurate. Suffice to say, though, that the hooligan won't meet my needs. If I were car camping or I couldn't afford anything better it's a nice alternative, but I'm working with the $100-$200 range here.

I didn't say anything was wrong with OP's tents listed, minus the ALPS because that brand in general is just shit. The products I've used from them are terrible. The Mtn hardware and Mountainsmith are pretty close, I was looking at the wrong weight for the mtn hardware though, saw the pitch light instead of the actual packed weight which threw me off.

Makes much more sense now. That one is still a bit heavy for me. I recognize that it's not a bad weight for a 4-season but I won't really be encountering any heavy snowfall in GA.

It's interesting though and slightly changes my opinion about Coleman. Thanks, anon.

Look at this one. Not sure what colors you can get it in but for a 2p tent, it's got great ventilation, superior rainfly opening and is pretty damn cheap. Also the weight isn't terribad.
