To each their own, but the entire REI generation of campers/hikers are like annoying parrots. Weight matters, but when they talk about skimping on utility/essentials in the name of a few ounces I cringe.
When I was enlisted we would consistently pull training and operations that would make Beardo McHipster's air mattress laden AT excursions look like picnics at the park, with packs that weighs 3 and 4 times what most granola munching pussy hiking enthusiasts would consider "too heavy."
Not trying to beat my chest or even direct the above at you specifically, but at some point utility, function and hell even minor comfort trumps a completely pain free hiking experience.
I do appreciate the melted wax suggestion, may try that when my current bag of tinder runs out.
