Hubby and I have a large garden. We started out feeding ourselves, then friends and family. When demand became too high to keep up we started to buy organic veggies from neighbors. It turned into a full blown business and now we own a produce brokerage that specializes in local organic heirlooms.

But this year I have Lund myself with a big dilemma. We have decided to move, and are currently looking at houses. My garden is just getting started. I have seed potatoes sprouting an tomato/pepper transplants waiting to go into the ground. But we may be moving in a few short months. So now I don't know what to do.
Plant the garden or not? I might as well plant it, but it's hard to put all the work in just to leave it behind.

Yeah, I grow potatoes in a barrel and they do quite nicely. WalMart even sells a two piece bucket with an inner piece that can be removed for easy access to the potatoes.

I suggest you start by putting down a layer of dirt, then the potatoes, then covering them with 2 inches of dirt. Once they grow to be a couple inches tall add more dirt until only the top pokes out. Keep this up until the bucket is full. The buried stems will grow more tubers which will increase you yield.

Check out the Kenosha Potatoe Project.
It has a ton of info on growing taters in grow bags. What type of bags to get, what kind of potatoes do best in grow bags, what type of "soil" to put in the bags etc. I always grow about 100 row feet of taters a year (via the deep mulch methode). I also grow them in bags, and the yield is always good.

What is wrong with the midwest weather with regards to gardening?

My grandfather and mother have their respective gardens planted, I would have one as well if I owned a house but I am stuck in a apartment. The best I could do is upside down tomatoes but I am not home enough because of work to even do that.

I just freakin' love growing potatoes. They are so beautiful fresh out of the ground. Many have a pearlescent shine to them when young.
I really got into potatoes after reading Carol Deppe's book, "The Resiliant Gardener". She talks about sustinence farming in the Pacific Northwest. Her main crops are the three sisters (corn, beans, squash), and potatoes. She also keeps ducks for their eggs (they do better in the cold and wet. They lay as well as chickens.).
Her book is a great source for info on growing potatoes.

Has anybody here tried different soils for Venus flytraps? I tried Peat Moss alone, Peat moss + Quartz sand 1/1 and this year I'm trying peat moss with pine needles because I've read they were better than sand. I don't see any differences between it and peat with sand. Next year I'll try to grow them in live sphagnum, since everybody seems to say it's the best thing they can grow on.

Any opinions on the matter?

Tried potatoes for the first time this year. Not a big success.

One major problem: I cut up spuds from the supermarket. Their eyes didn't develop well. Learned later that they're sometimes sprayed with chemicals to keep them from sprouting.

Going to try again in the fall.

mostly i keep drosera and sarracenia. i have one dionaea and terrestrial utricularia though.
i'm relatively new at keeping carnivorous plants, so i haven't really experimented with different soils.
i would suggest adding perlite to the peat moss to help aerate the roots. seems like sand and peat, or just peat, would be kind of heavy and hard for roots to spread?

took this picture of my drosera capensis the other day. next to it is some sort of pygmy drosera, i can't really remember which because i threw away the identification without thinking. ( ._.)

Having seen potatoes being grown for over 2 decades, i assure you that it is either what you mentioned, bad earth or not enough water. As long as those points are out of the picture, they are almost an infailable crop - sans the bugs or disease. There ought to be farmer online shops or something, where you can buy seed potatoes - often enough even those that were used before industrialization made 3-5 of them "the staple". We tried a few of those at home and they were great. Trying a few sorts of them might also be advisable for you in case you do not have "good" earth for them.

Drosera (capensis and spatulata at least) multiply like a pest anywehre they can grow... but Dionaea, those picky bastards...

I can't remember the name too... pygmaea? Beware with the capensis, they are the most prolific carnivorous plant.

have you thought of doing tissues cultures with the dionaea and experimenting with small plants in different mediums to see which works best? i was just browsing through this: http://www.terraforums.com/forums/showthread.php?126214-Small-tissue-culturing-success/
seems like a neat way to get a high yield of plants for experimenting.

Start with a container garden. Up front investment is super cheap, it's portable, and is still useful for herbs once you plant a raised bed.

Get a big, long, container, and drill half a dozen 1/2" holes in the bottom for drainage. 3' x 4' is pretty big
Place the container in a sunny spot. Put odd-shaped rocks over the 1/2" holes and then dump potting soil into your container.

Make dividers to separate the container into plots approximately 1'x1'

Pick seeds that are suited for the amount of sunlight at your chosen location, and the expected low temperatures in your area.

Basil, dill, sage, and rosemary are all easy to grow in warm sunny areas, and are very useful kitchen herbs.

Plant seeds in each 1x1 plot. Don't overcrowd because you're going to have to thin the plot to just 1-3 plants so they have room to mature.

Water every day or two (just don't flood the container), and you'll have a summer garden box in no time.

And my capensis had spread everywhere they could grow, the seeds are really small and sometimes you don't notice them on your hands and they end up near other plants with similar conditions (sarracenia or other drosera)

I've got a real clever and annoying gopher in my garden area. I've used traps and gotten plenty of gophers before, but this one doesn't go for the traps and just fills in the tunnels I put them in. I don't want to use poison because I have dogs, any advise for getting rid of this little bastard?

Have you tried upside down tomatoe planters? My grandfather uses them because of his bad knee, he cant crawl around the garden as much anymore so he uses upside down planters for a majority of his garden and they work great. He said they actually produce better then planting it in the ground or in pots like you have yours in.

I got it a week or so ago from a nursery. I watered it, took it inside when it got cold, made sure it had good sunlight, etc

Dont over water your plants, also they dont always need sunlight, some shade doesnt hurt them either. People do cover their tomatoe plants during the initial growing process to protect from too much sunlight, not so much once the plant is grown but during initial growth.

The bucket or pot that the plant is in, its not a rare thing.

That is outside of my knowledge, honestly I have no clue.
I just know a lot of elderly do this plants now because they have back, knee, leg problems that prevent them from doing regular garden work.

You didn't break your plant. It is fruiting and drains nutrients from the leaves to do so. Completely normal, will always happen to some degree. The bottom leaves go first, and it works it's way up from there.

Your plant overall looks a bit light in colour though. In general this suggests a nitrogen-shortage, tomatoes more specifically are also a bit prone to magnesium deficiencies, which also cause yellowing. This doesn't necessarily mean there isn't enough of those elements available in the soil; your plant could just be having trouble absorbing them (possibly because your overwatering for example, like the other helpful anon suggested). If you have ruled out any external causes, you can solve your problem by simply adding some fertilizer. Nothing is lost yet, the plant and it's fruit can still easily be saved.

I added some plant food today, fingers crossed that it will help! I gave them a little water today because the plant food is granular and needs water in order to dissolve it, but I'm going to try to leave them alone for a few days. I'll keep an eye on them, but just not try to bother them too much.

Also the container is a 1/2 Gallon, do you think I should bump it up to a full gallon or maybe 2 gallon container? I don't intend to have these in the garden(I have some marked out for that already), and I'm not sure what size container would work best.
A book I go by says that tomatoes need a 11/2 qt container, while dwarf varieties need a 5 gallon container.

pic is the Lemon Boy, it has only a few starting tomatoes but it's got a similar thing going on.

I myself am not a big fan of those upside down tomato planters. In my humble opinion they are one of those pinterest gardening fads meant to look fancy, largely ignoring practicality. I gave it my best two years in a row as a test despite knowing better. I got some nice fruit from it I must admit, but the crop was meager compared to that grown in exactly the same soil the same year the traditional way.

Geotropism wasn't a problem though. Tomatoes are opportunistic vining plants by nature; they'll easily rotate their leaves to still catch the sunlight on the right side. The growing tip does tend to bend upwards of course, but the stem is flexible enough to be straightened out by the weight eventually.

It depends on how big you'll let the plant get, and the nutrients present in the soil at the moment. A bigger pot with more soil will give you a bigger 'buffer' with nutrients (or when fertilizing) and moisture. I myself have grown tomato plants a bit bigger than yours in similarly sized pots without running into any troubles.

Note that it will not 'heal' the yellow leaves that already have been drained, it will simply stop the problem from progressing.
Quick release artificial fertilizer will work the fastest, but is also the easiest way to accidentely 'overdose' your plants; causing a sudden large increase in soil salinity will disrupt the roots' homeostasis, colloquially referred to as nutrient burn. Slow release or natural fertilizers will work gradually but won't 'cause any nuteburn unless you go 'full retard'.

Indeed, I share your approach. See what works for you. Tomatoes don't tend to be all that fussy. Most people mess up by pampering them too much; overfeeding or overwatering are in my (again humble) opinion/experience the most common mistakes. I hope it all works out for you. Let us know

I'm going to transplant them into a potting soil that's supposed to feed for 9 months(osmocote), should I not add additional supplements with that? I'm also kind of worried if it's too late to transplant, since they've both started bearing tomatoes.

I'll do my best to give them space; it's hard this time of year, since the garden isn't put in yet(frost expected monday night for me), so anything I have.. it gets a LOT of attention. I should really just leave them alone for a bit...

Very cute Bunny btw, I have wild ones that run around my backyard often. They've dug in the garden while it was empty, but not when it had veg in it. Rather well behaved, really, for wild rabbits.

I wouldn't if I were you. Proper potting soil in itself should be sufficient. I would only add supplements when deficiencies would start showing up.

I forgot about that detail in my previous post. The general rule of thumb indeed is to not transplant a flowering or fruiting plant. I do not know how this pertains to tomatoes in particular I'm afraid so they might be okay with it, but I myself wouldn't risk it. The container seems large enough to me to grow a decent sized plant with 4 or 5 racemes of tomatoes anyway.

Thanks, I unexpectedly grew quite fond of it. I initially started keeping rabbits for meat. Getting them as cute baby bunnies was a mistake. I now content myself with their manure and company.

Pic unrelated; I harvested spinach today, exactly one month after sowing it. If it doesn't get too warm too quick, then it'll regrow a second time before bolting.

There were quite a few gardening tripfags and regulars in the /ck/-days, but their number seems to have declined quite drastically. I'm an amateur compared to them.

I also posted quite a few vertical progress and compilation pics in the previous gardening thread here on /out/.

My garden is currently being invaded by cockchafers, in such numbers that they have me concerned, and their population peak is still to come. Contrary to your american cicadas they do quite a lot of damage to crops. Pic related; taken a few hours ago when some got into the house.

Indeed. I added a few pictures from last year so you can see. The string bears most of the load, the sticks just make sure they don't sway in the wind too much, preventing ropeburn on the stems. I prefer sisal or other natural fibers because you can simply compost them when you're done. I use new rope every year, to prevent transmitting diseases through them.
I let them get about 1.5meters high, about 5feet, before pinching off the growing tip; I get 4 or 5 racemes per plant. The growing season over here is too short to let them get much bigger.

This is is now. Last week we had a few days of 90+ degree weather and the direct sunlight ended up damaging my lettuce and kiling 60% of my cilantro plant. But from this i learned a lesson, i made a scrolling shade cloth for when we have sunny days again.

I suggest planting through the side of the bucket instead of the bottom. This will keep the plant's leaves dry.

You can cut off the end of the handle that is broken, reshape it with a knife, drill a hole down the middle and reattach the hoe head. After that, drill a hole through the entire thing and put a bolt through it. It'll last a long long time. Just keep it dry and out of bad weather.

I live in the high desert and don't have a single tree on my property but the dirt is decent and holds moisture, there's just a lot of wind. We bought all the above kinds of mint, the morracan is doing the best, and I'd like to propagate it to line a walkway about 100ft before winter. The only problem is I only have 2 smallish plants to work from.

I keep the soil moist. It's 50% topsoil, 10% peat, 10% sand, 10% clay, 10% worm castings, 5% perilite, and 5% [etc] fertilizers/inert stuff. 6-7 hours of full sun, the rest is shade.

I took some cutting and tried to root them but they rooted very slowly, and only a few survived to rooting, I'd like to speed the growth of the mother plant if possible. Tips?

Most people asking advice about mints are having problems containing them. If I wouldn't keep mine in check, the surface they cover would more than quadruple in size each growing season. I mostly grow lemon mint, with some pepermint and morrocan mint on the side. The bottomless container I keep them in burst due to freezing, so it 'escaped' and it doubled in size despite being cut back and harvested a lot throughout last season.

Mints put out runners towards the end of the season. These easily take root and form a new plant at every node. One could easily get more than 20 plantlets from a single motherplant this way every season.

I myself never had any problems getting mint cuttings to root. Something else you might try is tying a stem to the ground after stripping the tied down nodes their leafs. I don't know the proper English term for this technique.

Like I said it's my first time growing them, so I'm going on what I read online and general experience with other crops. A tip I can already share is to go for an autumn planting, instead of an early spring one. The ones I planted October last year are doing much better, with more flowers and foliage than the spring-planted ones. They were of comparable size and quality, and got planted in the same soil. It's the same with my black- and raspberry plants.

Also, paying for strawberry plants is a bit silly imho, seeing as most cultivars put out runners at the end of the season. I simply traded some produce to different other gardeners for their strawberries during summer, and asked the one with the strawberries I liked the most if I could have some of his plantlets in autumn. Most gardeners get more clones from their plants than they know what to do with.

Pic unrelated; My rhubarb plant finally seems to be recovering. It unexpectedly responded badly to transplanting a few weeks ago.

Don't be discouraged by mishaps in the beginning. Harvesting your first crop will make it all worth it, especially with homegrown fruits like tomatoes or strawberries. It took me 3 growing seasons before I managed to properly grow tomatoes of sufficient quality and a high enough quantity to compensate all the work that goes into cultivating them in my rather cold and wet climate. Now I can't imagine buying the watery excuse for tomatoes you find in the store.

Still looks like you're going to have a respectable harvest! A hat tip to you, good sir. I wish I could grow peppers; having a greenhouse is pretty much a prerequisite for their cultivation over here. Might I suggest giving yours some magnesium? They seem to display a deficiency.

I was talking about the yellow leaves with the contrasting green veins, mainly showing in older growth. It's a classic sign of a magnesium or phosphorus deficiency, depending on the plant genus. These nutrients are rather mobile within the plant, so it recuperates them from older growth when there is a shortage, causing the yellowing. Google some pictures with 'magnesium shortage peppers' or something like that, and you'll see what I mean.

It's normal for this to occur to some degree when a plant starts blooming and fruiting; it takes a lot from a plant to do so and it will sacrifice foliage for a higher chance of reproductive success (bigger and more fruits). Your jalapeno plant seems to be afflicted quite extensively though.

Pic kinda related; some of my tomato plants last year, suffering from the same shortage while blooming. To a lesser degree though.

I've never let my carrots go to seed, so I can't help you there I'm afraid. I'm planning on letting one of my parsnips go to seed this year since it is recommended to use fresh seed every year, so I'm probably in for a comparable adventure.

For the seeds, let it bloom and it will eventually fold up on itself and dry out. Once it gets dried out, snip the stem off and take it inside. Get a bowl and start freeing the seeds from it. The seeds will look like this.

My carrots last year got eaten off right when they started to go to seed. ;_;

FYI, Queen Anne's Lace (wild carrot) acts in the same manner and is also edible when very young. Where I live it blooms everywhere.

Peat moss/horse manure and sand (sand from a non-saltwater beach source) is what you need. Till it into the soil. To limit the amounts you need for large plots you can simply make a 5-gallon bucket's worth of it with some of your soil (play around with the amounts you need). Then dig out a hole where you want a single plant to be. You may want to look up the depth and size of that plant's root ball to get the hole large enough. Then fill it with the prepared soil and plant in it.

I did that for my cucumbers the first year I was gardening in one of my gardens and they did extremely well. Think of it as if you were container gardening only the pot holding the plant happens to be the ground.

It really depends on you soil. Just play around until it feels like good rich soil. Remember, if you are using horse manure, it needs to be aged horse manure. Fresh stuff will only root burn your plants if there's too much. Right now you need more biomass in the soil, like the peat moss for instance. Which is an okay substitute for horse manure in soil conditioning.

I'm lucky to have both. A rather small 'regular' cherry tree for fruit production, and a large ented Japanese cherry tree for its sakura during spring. The fruit-producing one blooms white and rather modest most years, the other one blooms pink 'like those in the japanese pictures'.

I'd advise using google to get decent information. I myself am located in Belgium, what compares to your USDA zone 6b or 7. My cherries do fine and many people have one in their garden, for fruit or decorative purposes. Mine were both planted as young trees by my dad before I was born, about 27 years ago. Probably with what this anon >>122283 said in mind. I'm in need of a new cherry tree too but won't be using seed from my on cherries, because I'll probably end up with a hybrid and not a tree comparable to the motherplant. I'm going to try my hand at taking softwood cuttings, and if those fail I'll probably buy one.

Do note that the japanese cherry has gone through some amateuristic pruning the last years which make it seem smaller; you don't need to wait 27years to get a very pretty tree. The fruiting cherry also had to deal with me building treehouses in it as a child with no regard to its health, and it's trunk has been diseased for over a decade. It still fruits in abundance if the conditions are right, but probably would've been bigger and more healthy if I left it alone.

If you've done it before you know it is pretty easy. You may still learn some tips you didn't know before: just get 6 inch long cuttings, remove all buy the top two leaves and shove the entire thing into the ground until only the top two buds are sticking out. Use a pencil or other long spike (a pitch fork does 4 holes at a time) to help make the hole to slide them in if needed. Do this in a very shaded area of your yard/garden. Keep the ground moist there.

You can also prepare them the same way then submerge them in a bucket of water up to the same point. If you take lots of willow tree cuttings (any willow family type of tree will work) and put them in the same bucket, their root hormones will help trigger root growth on your cuttings as well. You can also just make a bucket of water with willow cuttings and water then after a week start using some of that water to water the cuttings in the ground (or in pots, where ever you have them) and the root hormone will help them.

When you take cuttings. Take a LOT as part of a trimming regiment. It is best to do this in the spring just as the buds are starting to come out.

Well, the wood of fruit trees are very good for wood working stuff and you or local wood workers may love to have it. So, if you want to save the wood for that purpose you should trim all the small limbs of fairly carefully before cutting it all the way down. That way there's less weight on the trunk and less chance of the trunk falling over as you cut it and splitting the middle of the trunk. So, cut it off in as long pieces as you can from the top down while preventing splitting of the wood.

If you just want to get rid of it without regard to the wood, just cut it down as you would any tree (google how to chop a tree down).

The stump can be removed using shovels to expose the roots and axes to cut the roots off. That way you get the crown of the stump so much that you can level the ground without there being lumpy roots all over sticking out.

If you want to plant a new tree in the exact same spot you should use the full compost method. Essentially, you dig a 10 feet diameter hole that is 2 feet deep and completely fill it with composted stuff and/or 2-year old horse manure so that it is mounded up about 1/2 a foot above the surrounding ground (google compost specifics for your type of fruit tree). Then plant the new tree there. This is something you should do with all new fruit trees, but especially if the spot is where an old tree once was. Yes, all this is a lot of work, but it is well worth it in the long run as you will get more fruit in a faster amount of time.

It could be anything from sap of the leaf to aphid/scale honeydew. You can rule out the latter if there's no aphids or scales in the area. Check for bugs with proboscis that can pierce the plant. Those can cause a wound that can juice out like that on some plants. If the plant shows no sign of damage or disease, I'd not worry about it.

Aesculus hippocastanum is a large deciduous tree, commonly known as horse-chestnut or conker tree.

They grow all over here in Sweden. Huge ass trees. Live for hundreds of years. Sadly not something you just put in your garden like that, but the flowers are amazing and in the spring the entire tree is white with little yellow and red dots if you get close.

Indeed. Though, the larger and older it is the more it will cost. Normally, you set a dollar amount and get the largest trees you can for that amount. This cuts out a lot of years waiting and waiting. There's no real need to wait.

With your fingers, squish the fruit and in water separate the seeds out of the fruit. Wash the seeds well. Go to the store and buy some Dr. Pepper or Coke-a-Cola. Place the seeds in a small bowl and pour in some of the soda you bought. Come back in about 15 minutes max and rinse the seeds off very well. Plant them or sprout them in whatever seed nursery you might have.

The soda's acidic quality helps remove a protective layer on the mulberry seeds. This emulates the digestive system of a bird. Normally, the seeds are eaten be a bird and passed through and crapped out where they can sprout.

The same thing needs to be done with various other seeds. Black Elderberry seeds are notorious for not sprouting and need an acid treatment. Otherwise, they only sprout up to 2 years after planting them.

The best way to get some blackberries is by digging them up. They normally send out runners underground which pop up a couple of feet from the main plant and grow into a new plant. They can be rather invasive that way and in some states it is illegal to grow them.

I've tried and tested the 'dry yeast in jelly'-method last year and it worked out great for me. I put it in an empty butter tub with some holes punched in it and placed it near the nest. The ants supposedly die after eating the jelly because of the yeast fermenting in their bodies. Any sugary substance can substitute the jelly.

This year I'm growing some mint next to a spot with a recurring ant colony. They should dislike that enough to leave according to google. It seems to be working, but the weather conditions have been far from optimal for ants. So I'm not considering it an effective method just yet.

The ants are harvesting honeydew from them. Look into beneficial insects and companion planting. You can attract predator insects by planting certain flowers and plants with your vegetables.

It's only 13 plants, so no real problem. They've been outside at night with temps at +5 °C.

In the US, there are certain crops where you cant buy seeds other than Monsantos GM.
Monsanto even made sure of this by suing all the seed cleaners and putting them out of business. The seed cleaners were in the right but Monsanto simply dragged them through the courts until the seed cleaners ran out of money to pay their lawyers and had to concede; bankrupted and jobless.

Nice group of guys at Monsanto. You dont have to be right to win in court, just rich.

Here's some of what I've been up to lately. Reposted form /diy/ and edited to be under 2,000 characters.

Upper 10 images.

1: Bushel gourd plant volunteers.
2: My ducks.
3: The chicken coop I had moved here 2 days ago. It needs a few nails here and there, but is solid as a rock.
4: A golden sebright bantam came with the coop.
5: Bantam chicken tractor.
6: Temporary chicken tractor.
7: Pineapple plants.
8: One of my blueberry bushes.
9: My big cock.
10: 1 of 8 raised beds. It is filled yard clippings and chicken manure. The grass clippings were 3 feet above the tops and have compacted down. It'll be ready next season for planting.

Lower 10 images.

1 & 2: My main blackberry rows; 6 rows, all 70 feet long. I use these to make blackberry mead, jams, & jellies.
3: Yukon gold potatoes in one garden. Except for strawberries, the rest of this garden (3/5th of it) is dedicated to growing flint corn & popcorn.
4: Same garden, showing tons of volunteer gourds.
5: One of many hives I have. Only 3 survived this winter. This is where I get my honey for the blackberry mead.
6: I did some mowing today. Here's 1.5 hours worth of work and it isn't even 1/4th of the amount I'll get from mowing the lawn this week. It'll be used to fill the next raised bed.
7: Another of my gardens. This shows hundreds of volunteer tomatillos that have come up every year on their own for the past...5 years. lol Icicle radishes also volunteer as easily.
8: Random plants, broccoli, sugar snap peas, carrots, volunteer potatoes, and a tomato all in this pic.
9: Raised bed dedicated to brand new strawberry plants. There are 3-4 varieties in there. It is intended to have strawberries coming on and ripening all through the year; dependent on the type of strawberry.
10: Partial pic of one of my grape vines. I pruned it heavily last spring and let it grow properly then pruned it heavily this spring and the amount of grapes bunches it has now has quintupled since last year.

Watering the leaves in full sun can also cause minerals in the water to collect on the ends of the leaves where the water evaporates. Welp, posted way too early. It's on almost all of my tomato plants. Only on lower, older leaves. They're standing in pots, outside under a roof. Might've gotten wet though, due to some nasty winds & rain. It's been raining for weeks and has been pretty cold as well.

Does that black stuff rub off? If so it is probably black mildew. It is a #1 indicator of a white fly infestation. If it does not rub off and the plants don't seem otherwise affected, don't worry about it.

Check for white flies then. They will be on the undersides of leaves. Especially neat the top. Their frass and honeydew falls on the older leaves and mildews grow on it.

Zone 4-5 it seems. You need to figure out when the first frost is in your area. The number of days to that time is what is left of your growing season. Choose plants that list their days to maturity as being less than that number.

Not all varieties are the same for the same vegetable. So, if one pepper or tomato takes forever to get to maturity another may not.

Your soil type is dependent on what type of crops you'll be growing. So, figure out what you want to grow then look up the best soil type for it.

You need actual soil, not just compost from a single source like that. It is good to mix dirt, sand, and compost together that always works very well. Other than that, who knows why your stuff is dying without being there to see all the varibles.

I live in Florida where the dirt IS sand. Everything I grow is stunted. Most things turn yellow and die before producing anything substantial. I've tried mixing in store-bought compost and composted manure, this seemed to help a tiny bit but I still have problems with stunted growth.

I've read that sandy Florida soil is notoriously poor, apparently nutrients get washed away easily in the rainy season. The garden has been neglected for at least a decade. Could it be that over the past ten years, most of the nutrients have washed away?

Yes, you need to always add new material to fertilize your garden after every season. This can be a special cover crop, chemical fertilizer (I don't recommend that), or organic fertilizer.

Interesting. I've been tilling beds ~3' x 5' and planting in rows. I thought maybe it would encourage lateral root growth which would be good because the top-soil is so thin. Do roots even work that way? Do they follow nutrients or just grow in a pattern determined by their DNA?

I understand that if you're using a garden space to grow food you're basically pulling nutrition out of the soil. But it seems counter-intuitive that leaving a space alone for a decade would deplete the soil. Or is it just that nature augments soil very slowly compared to composting?

Tilling everything is fine, if you want to do it. If you are taxed on time or materials, such as not having enough good soil then you can use the method I described.

The reason some land lacks nutrient is usually because the vegetation that grows on it depletes it and turns it into forms that are no longer nutrients after the plant dies. This is why cover crops are used. Those are plants that give back to the soil more nutrients of a specific type than what they take. You grow them then till them into the soil when you are ready to start the growing season.

Nature doesn't do much to make soil nice and rich for gardening. It takes centuries for enough plant matter to build up over time to even get close to the fraction of what you can do with compost in a single growing season.

It depends on the soil. Leaving sandy soil untouched and also unused by anything more than some grass and weeds can severely deplete it. A lot of important minerals wash out easily, most notably nitrates (KNO3) and magnesium. Perennial plants address this by rooting deeper and recycling nutrients by 'topdressing' themselves with their own foliage every fall.

Denser soils like clay are subject to the same washing out, albeit at a much slower rate of course.

I'm going to cross-post this since there is a good thread here in /out/ and in /diy/ and people in both places expressed interest.

Here are some minor updates to my gardening. There's nothing much to tell. I've just been weeding now and then, watering, and watching things grow. It's been kind of boring actually. Though, I need to mow the lawn and prepare the next large raised bed with the clippings from last time.

1: One of my gardens.
2: One of my raised beds with strawberries in them.
3: Potted bushel gourds.
4: Yukon Gold potatoes
5: Misc. crops; broccoli, sugar snap peas, carrots, tomatoes.
6: Carrots.
7: The first bell pepper.
8: The first tomatoes.
9: Volunteer Lamb's Quarter. I eat some of these raw 1-2 times a day.
10: Better view of the strawberry bed, prior to watering, after weeding.
11: A fence row full of honey suckle blooms. Some years I make honey suckle bloom mead or wine with these.
12: I had to put gravel in the tops of my plants to keep the raccoons from digging them up to look for insects and larva. I'll need to do the same with my potted bushel gourds.
13: My hardy banana plant. The first stalk died off over the winter just after these two stalks started. I may be able to divide it the next time I repot it, next year. The bricks are to prevent raccoon damage to the roots.
14: My flint corn and popcorn are both finally popping up well!
15: The blackberry rows look much the same.
16: Some rhubarb.
17: Tons of volunteer bushel gourd plants.
18: One of my concord grape vines blooming.

I myself don't bother with cover crops unless I get some surplus seed for free from somebody else. That only happened 2 times the last seven years. I manage just fine with mostly compost (almost exclusively from plant material) and some aged manure.

Pic related; I mended some soil with compost for a blackberry plant after being lawn for almost 20 years. You can see the contrast in the last one; mended soil, topsoil (top 30cm/12''), everything below.

It was like someone raked their lawn after a storm and tossed all the sticks into the compost but didn't wait for it to actually compost.

I pulled the last of the weeds up today so I figure I'd better plant something in their place. A lot of the cover crops I've found so far require inoculation. It sounds like a hassle.

Just plant them and forget about them.

FYI, any manure source can be used. Although, all need to be aged. Some longer than others. Horse manure is good after 1 year and soil made from it after 2 years is awesome. Human manure needs 1 year to age and human urine needs 2 months to age then needs diluted 1 part urine to 20 parts water. Always wait a year for all types of manure because they can carry bacteria that can cause sickness in you if you eat food that came in contact with it. A lot of plant-based food poisonings are caused when people are impatient about aging the manure fertilizer.

What comes out of my kitchen and out of my garden, nothing more. Leaves, plant clippings and mowed grass make for 85% of my composted materials I guesstimate. I turn and mix the whole thing about once every 2 or 3 months, but that's about it. I had a surplus of compost for the first time this year so I had a go at sieving it for easier storage; pic related. I'm not sure if the increase in quality was worth all the effort, but the result sure was nice.

Do note that I have a rather small garden. I don't know if my way of doing things scales up efficiently if you are using more space. Cover crops might have a better effort/results-ratio then.

The few times that I used green manure I did what the other helpful anon suggested; planted them and forgot about them. It worked out fine. I used clover; my rabbits and chickens like it and nitrogen fixation sounds nice to me.

I prefer diluting it with water and then letting it age. Urea converts into ammonia by absorbing a water-molecule. Putting it out in the sun speeds things up considerably too, since it's an slightly endothermic process. This way it's ready in a day or two. Letting it sit as a concentrated liquid will work too, but will take much longer since it will have to get its H2O from moisture in the air.

For poop-based manure I can only repeat what the other anon said; aging is mandatory. Cutting corners can mess up your plants and possibly you yourself. Baking it is sometimes suggested as a way to speed things up, but I'm not even going to try getting an okay from girlfriend for that kind of oven-usage. Not interested either.

Bush beans that I started indoors are doing nicely. The carrots started popping up just under a week ago. Something has been eating the leaves on my pea plants, but it looks like they should be ok.

The clay soil here can be a real bitch. Always crusting over and cracking.

I have looked into that in the past, but it doesn't seem like it would work for me. I would need about 6 of those barrels to process the volume I currently do. I have the heap you see in the pictures (pretty empty in those photo's) and two additional bins (pic related). Thanks for poitning it out anyway.

I'm still considering making one with openings in its side, covered with a wire mesh, hoping this would result in a more efficient 'sieving machine'. Will maybe become a summer project if I get bored.

So my sweet corn is facing what I believe to be a nitrogen deficiency, poor pollination and the only ear I got out of the four plants was from the most mature one.(others did not get much height and I don't see them developing much further in the poor soil I chose)

The ear I got did not emerge, was mouldy between the kernels and a few of the kernels seem to have begun growth.

I have a much better spot near my eggplants that could better support the plants but I'm concerned about the mold. I have no idea how to deter it unlike ants and aphids.

I am also concerned about whether or not I can trust those kernels that are sprouting off the ear. Will that interfere with growth, will the plant remain diseased?

I can fix the possible nitrogen problem with beans. Are there any species you would recommend?

Front step Sugar Snack cherry tomatoes are starting to flower. I hope two plants per pot isn't too much, the pot is fairly deep.

I've given up trying to grow tomatoes in the main garden. There's something resilient in the soil that keeps killing them mid-season.

The average temps for this time is normally in the 90s. This weather is cold, rainy, and generally shitty. What the hell is going on? I hope the first frost is extended so my crops have time to catch up and finish off.

The fuck is going on? My peppers and tomatoes hate this crap... all the nurseries around here are losing plants left and right because of this(sales everywhere tho-but I don't have anymore room).

I bought some Peruvian purple corn (maiz morado) a few days ago from a food supplier instead of a seed store/nursery ( http://www.amigofoods.com/pefomamo15oz.html ). Yesterday, I got them in the mail and set a few to soaking for 8 hours. I put them on a wet paper towel in a air -puffed ziplock bag and set them on a plate over the warm spot above my stove's burner cap pilot light area. Today, 5 of them have sprouted.

Now, I'm soaking all the rest for eight hours. I'll be planting them this evening. I just came in from hoeing the soil where these will be planted. I'm refraining from using my tiller so I can get a good workout.

Ha! No, I have not. The ones I bought are actually sold to be turned into a drink called "chicha" (chicha morada). However, I'll be turning mine into nixtamal then into masa (see pic).

Nice. I was thinking more that turning them would be a lot easier. It means you can compost your stuff in a faster amount of time and prevent bad anaerobic bacteria from causing problems due to not being turned.

My peppers and tomatoes aren't growing as quickly as usual, but my lettuce, strawberries, spinach, peas and broccoli are thriving. It's been a great spring so far.
