He was into book learning, likely mistook the wrong plant for a picture in a book, chemical in plant fucked with metabolism, so he starved to death even with food available. That's the theory, anyway. Books can be helpful, but nothing like learning from someone experienced, in the field. He was too much of a loner to pursue this.
