What budget should I set myself before vandwelling?
I am looking to be as frugal as possible, so no fancy solar panels, showers or kitchen. I can cook on campfires.
I'm aiming for about 2000 to 4000 dollars budget and I haven't bought my van yet.

I was looking at the Ford Econoline for stealth parking at night.
Any tips on vandwelling?

Why a van? Get a focus/old jap SUV like a Highlander. Unless you're very tall, sleeping in a focus would be plenty comfy and get double the gas mileage.

I did it for less. Not sure of the exact sum.

A circular saw, a drill, and a speed square are everything you need build the interior.
And you can do it while on the road.

Buy the van, but the three tools on amazon, tear out the interior, and move in.

Buy or borrow anything else when the need arises.

The budget is too low unless you aleeady have a vehicle. I'm 6'1" and lived out of an XJ cherokee for about 3 weeks comfortably while road-tripping so it can be done.

It's clear that a sprinter is out of your budget but I would suggest you spend at least 5k on the van itself. You can then build it up over time.

Once you get the van you can use your existing camping gear to live out of it. Maybe even splurge and buy a cot at the wally wally world for ultra-lux comfy sleeps. By the time you get there I bet there will be an HGTV couple doing a show about van renovation so you can get more ideas then.

I had a 1987 Ford Aerostar just like in the pic that I lived in. I got a cheap tinting kit and tinted the fuck out of the side/back windows so you couldn't see into the van through them. I also kept it clean (no bumperstickers or shit on the dashboard either) so it looked very inconspicuous when parked.

I eventually took the back seats out and chucked them to save space and things were a million times more comfy without the back seats, even when folded down they took up way too much room.

I had a big stir fry wok that I used as a wash basin if I needed to brush my teeth and shave inside of my van. It worked great and saved my ass plenty of times when I was someplace with no other options.

Also having a big bottle of antibacterial wipes is a must have for when you cant take a real shower. Just strip naked and scrub yourself down.

Eventually I got a membership at a fitness club. I'd wake up and go to Dennys or Waffle House and get a cheap breakfast and then use their bathroom to piss and shit. Brush my teeth in my van. Go to work. After work I'd go to gym and lift weights and then shower and shave there and put on fresh clothes. After that I'd typically eat dinner in my van. Then go and hang out in air conditioned library until closing (use their bathroom also). Then find someplace to park (walmart parking lots were good) and go to sleep. Wake up and repeat.

I wasnt camping or anything at the time though. I had a job and was going to work every day so my lifestyle was probably different than what you're aiming for.

Wow yeah I can imagine a liberty would be roungh.

I didn't build a platform until later (when I got a gf). I put the rear seatback down and took the bench part out. The bench is made to come out so that was easy. I folded a full size 4" mem foam pad hot dog style on the passenger side as my bed with a sheet and cheap walmart comforter and pillows (slept just as well as any regular bed). For the gap between the passenger front seat and the folded rear seats I put my toolbox on the ground. I never took pics or If I did I cant find them.

On the drivers side in the rear I just got a plastic bin to keep all my food and supplies.

To cover the windows I bought cheap but thick material and used velcro/binder clips to stick it up and remove it from the windows. If I were to do it again I would do cardboard cutouts instead. The adhesive on the back of the velcro began to have problems in the heat of the day after about 3 or 4 days.

I used a sun shade and binder clips to block the cab so the no one could see in the back through the windshield or front wondows (which I did not cover and would keep cracked open at night). This also allowed me to change in private.

Overall really basic setup but it worked great.

Spend 1.5 hours labor on your daily food. So, for a $10 an hour job that's $15 a day. More than enough if you eat well. Suggestions for eating includes bananas, canned fish, bread in small quantities (rots your teeth), yogurt about to expire, potato wedges for the vitamins, beans. It's dead simple

how to vandwell: have multiple spots, which you don't sleep in twice at night. And only go to them late in the evenin. Good luck

A 1kg bag is 1€ and lasts several meals for 2 days. I cook on day 1 and keep it in a container the second day. I say cook buy I really just heat in a pan with some oil.
Sometimes I stir fry with eggs.

Chickpeas and shit like that are cheap but not everyone wants to invest the time and resources it takes to cook.

freeze dried tortellini, mushrooms, garlic, bechamel sauce all for 3€ and good for 6 meals.
Sometimes I eat the tortellini without boiling. Its an OK snack.

Don't want to make sauce? There's several kinds of bottled pesto. All not expensive.

Pork and chicen is cheap if you want to eat meat. 3.,50€ for a whole chicken or a kg of Pork.
Stew or soup keeps well for a day.

Bread is practically free.

The less you cook the better. Less smell for one.

Yeah, keep your clothes and bedding clean and washed regularly. Small spaces can get permastinky fast. Try to find breezy and shady spots to park, Get a gym membership so you can stay showered.

I used to live in my old 1980 VW Westfalia when I wasn't driving OTR, I didn't see a point in paying rent for a whole month when I'd only be "home"
for one day a week, I was able to keep my van at the Trucking Co's yard when I was OTR, and if I didn't head out to the beach or mountains I could just chill at in the yard, so I saved a shitpile of cash in the longrun even though I wasn't making all that much. Of course being a single and a truck driver I generally didn't need a ton of stuff. It was pretty liberating that way.

I paid $3500 cash for my westy, it was the perfect blend of still functional and ugly enough that I could get it cheap without attracting too much unwanted attention to itself. But really any van will do.

Everyone does van living backwards. Work at night, sleep during the day. Find a night shift job, they usually pay a buck or so more an hour anyway. I'd get off work around 7 and go park in the mall parking lot, around the time it was opening up. Never got hassled by security once. Just make sure you leave by closing time. Head over to Wally World after that. Sleep or chill until it was time for work.

Not all of them, but asking for a 30+ year old car to be in perfect shape for less than 5k is a bit unrealistic, what I did was save up the cash and wait for one to hit the market that was drivable. Had I been willing to put work into it I could have sold it for a pile of cash. All I did to mine was regular maintenance and change out the curtains, and I sold it for 5k to another OTR trucker when I quit driving. With all the money I saved not paying rent, the van payed for itself, paid me again when I sold it, and I got myself a Condo, paid for in cash. Now I only work P/T when I feel like it. Shit's great.

P.S. you get all kinds of crazy pussy in a Westy. IDK why. pic related.

Get one that sort of runs, is cancer free, has a solid interior and has a roof that doesn't leak. Thats it.

I can give you some cleaning, painting, and nice-ing up tips if you want.
Faded plastic, surface rust, mold on the roof, all can be made to fuck off with one weird tip that dealers hate.

I've done both. Both involve a lot of prep work.
Both get excellent results.
The price difference is Jose with the spray gun charges $40 an hour for labor and $1200 for the cost of paint. All that adds up.
