Been trying to justify getting a UV5R. I wouldn't be using it for work, just when /out/ with others and events/etc. Not planning on using it for anything besides frs/gmrs; weather info and fm stations are nice options to have though.

I like that it has a changeable antenna (go larger for better reception) and can operate at higher power than off-the-shelf 22 channel radios. No, I don't care that it's "illegal", but I feel like it's overkill for what I want out of it.

For $30, should I take the plunge?
Is there a different model out there with slightly less features for a lower price?

The majority of people seem to be pretty satisfied with them, for the price.
