That, or one of the various chest rigs would be the more appropriate manner. The chest rigs like the hill people gear also let you keep your compass, map, etc all stowed nicely and accessible.. and keep it on you even when you doff pack.
Long gun stowage, there's all sorts of solutions to include a bunch of options from Kifaru, Eberlestock, and numerous other companies. I have an eberlestock and like it.
A thigh holster would also work, provided you wear it properly IE just low enough to clear the belt and still be able to draw. I would try to make it work on the belt before going that route, I always hated thigh rigs regardless of positioning due to disliking things around my legs and the weight on my leg.
