The penalty for not having a firearm can also be extremely severe.
This leaves only one option.
I live in Maryland. In Maryland we must register all handguns and we must have a license to buy, sell, or rent (out) a handgun.
I could have an illegal handgun, it would not be hard. But the penalty for it, should I be caught, defeats the purpose of having it; continuing my life and protecting my family. Which I cannot do if I am convicted of multiple felonies.
Likewise, I cannot continue living my life and protecting my family if I am killed because I have no firearm at all.
So I bit the bullet, so to speak, and I went through the bullshit process of getting my HQL (handgun qualification license) and took the lesser of three evils (/consequences).
