Howdy
I'm been interested in hunting for a long time. All the hunters i know don't seem willing to show me the ropes, so I plan to do it myself this year. I'd like to know what classes and licences I need to have and if I should start out using a bow or shotgun as well as gutting the deer and securing it to my vehicle.
I live in Michigan btw

Dont use a shotgun for deer. Dont use a bow unless you're experienced because you're more than likely to injure it and cause suffering. Get a 270 bolt action and get good.

Michigan has no permit required for long guns (rifles) so as long as you can pass a background check you can buy a rifle. Just show up with proof of residence and a state issued ID. And of course hunters safety course, hunters license for the state. Deer season for rifles is usually a short window so you better get started.

Aim for the heart/lungs, and learn how to braintan hides. A .22 lr (ammo is cheap as dirt) is sufficient the things you'll be tackling as a newbie hunter. Take basic gun safety classes, and have fun.

That is great for target practice when new, or small game.
OP is talking deer and it's not even legal in my state to use less than a .270 rifle or .44 handgun.

also it's become somewhat impolite to just strap a dead deer to your car, so if you don't have a pickup, get a trailer and wrap it in a tarp.

Its like that in my part of MD too. They say its due to the area being too developed and populated so its dangerous to use a rifle. Keep in mind too that these laws were made probably before the days when a sabot slug and rifled barrel will give shotguns rifle like performance out to 200yds +, and that laws are made by ppl who know shit about guns and ammo.

My advice is don't do it alone your first time. Been hunting for a long time op. Chances are you won't get a perfect shot. A deer can be very difficult to clean with a botched shot. Also it could be potentially illegal if you kill the deer and don't have the know how on how to clean it and preserve the meat properly. Most States it is a crime to waste game. Also if you don't know the basics or have never been in the field hunting there's a lot that could go wrong. Find a buddy. If you want to go alone, start with small game. Big game is a whole other world op.

IL is shotgun-slug only. Parts of the coastal South are shotgun only (although buckshot is legal). IN is straight-wall calibers only, no "modern" bottlenecked rifle rounds. I'm sure there's others.

Honestly, my impression having been in your exact situation and finding a lot out for myself, is that most people don't know that much about hunting. Even the long term moose hunters are usually just one of a 10 man group and never the ones to do the scouting and research and effort.

It is my sincere belief that most people don't think they have enough info or resources to offer an eager novice hunter. Most of them are far more casual than the average obsessed 4chaner.

Let's be real, it's basically inevitable that hunting be an activity dominated by backwoods morons. No offence to your contacts, but you need to consider the odds.

Lots of places with flat terrain and people living in every nook and cranny of the land have those restrictions too.
The last thing you want is for an errant rifle shot to go the wrong way and end up hurting or killing someone.
The maximum range of a rifle bullet is 3 miles. Shotguns and black powder weapons is around 1/2 mile. That makes for an extra margin of safety for the people around you that you might need.

Both are overkill for deer at ranges inside of 200 yards.
A 30-30 is all the gun you need for hunting situations east of the Mississippi, and you can even go lighter than that now.
Texas and the Great Plains are a different story to be sure, but in the forests of OP's Michigan he's not going to get many shots longer than 100 yards, and snap shots at 50 yards are far more common. At those distances, he doesn't even need a scope-it's well within the point blank ranges of most any rifle in the gun shop. He can just point and shoot and be close enough to where he was aiming to kill a deer with plain old iron sights, or even the bead sight of a shotgun. All a scope will do at that range is add cost, weight and extra time to find the deer in your sights.

My family is from the hinterlands of Michigan, and "deer rifle" is their local slang for a 30-30 carbine. Hunting up there you can see why: it's compact, easy to carry, quick to your shoulder, doesn't kick much, and follow up shots are quicker than a bolt action. And for a long time, it was better than anything else you could buy for hunting that terrain. Even today, you'll be hard pressed to find a better rifle for hunting in thick cover.

When traveling to go hunting, ALWAYS transport your gun unloaded and your ammo stored separately from your gun-this is Federal Law, and lots of places big and small like to bust people with guns who forget this. Stay out of jail, keep the gun separate from your ammo in the car.

Once in the woods you'll need at least a certain amount of blaze orange when hunting (think vest-sized).

This is not a federal law. This is a state issue for intrastate travel or even for interstate travel.

In general though you should transport your hunting weapon unloaded. The only weapons you should transport loaded, assuming the state allows it, are your concealed carry piece or a truck gun if that's your thing.

I'm assuming the laws in Michigan for hunting are about the same as Washington State, which is where I am from/where I hunt.
Take hunter's safety courses. The most important thing you can ever learn about hunting animals is safety. They'll teach you about ethical shooting, where to shoot an animal, how to smoothly shoot a rifle to guarantee a consistent shot every time, and to be aware of backdrop behind the animal. The bullet does not always stop inside the animal; lots of bullets go through. If the deer is standing on a skyline, do not shoot it. Make sure there's a backstop to it.
As for weapons, I don't know too much about shotguns. I only hunt birds with shotguns.
As for rifles, for deer hunting, something fairly small always works. I used to hunt with a .243 WSSM. I upgraded to a .257 Weatherby, and now I hunt with a Tikka T3, and I love it. It'll take some experimenting to find the weapon of your choice.
As for archery, start off with a 45-50lb bow to get your muscles accustomed to it. Even the strongest guy in the world would struggle if he weren't used to using his back muscles for pulling a bow. Shoot at a target 3-4 times a week, and get those muscles strong.

If you're US/Leaf the various wildlife services organizations have classes (many of which are free) for new or prospective hunters. Go to them, learn, team up with other cherry hunters.

The long range "sniper" type rifles are more suited for large open areas like Texas, Montana, or Alaska. When you can actually see something over 300 yards away with few obstructions.

Also you may need help in field dressing a kill for your first time. For whatever reason people want to stab their knife into the deers belly rather than lightly slice so you don't rupture the intestines, or bladder.

Sorry to OP for barging in but I'm in the exact same position.
I was sent here by /k/ since i guess 2017 is different than 2012 (been gone) and hunting is no longer /k/. I got certified a long time ago but never went hunting and don't have a lot of time to sit around in a blind and i like the idea of stalk/still hunting.

Is this a good strategy?

Works just fine with the proper ammunition. Do not shoot plinking ammo, get actual softpoints.

Some states have minimum bore diameter or caliber restrictions, make sure it's legal to use where you live.

I've checked with my local laws and it seems like it's alright for me to pop Bambi with it. Any ammo you reccomend? I heard they make some heavier grain bullets in .223/5.56 for hunting but I haven't been able to find any in stores.

I've killed a lot of deer with handloads using the 64gr Nosler Bonded. Otherwise I can highly recommend both Federal Fusion 62gr and Winchester Super X 64gr. They expand VIOLENTLY yet still get sufficient penetration.

The bullet used in Fed Fusion is the same one used in the Federal LE Barrier Blind and from the same family as the Speer Gold Dot. While I've not personally used either of those loads the differences will be unnoticeable and I am 100% confident in endorsing them.

Palmetto State Armory usually has either the Fed LE or the Gold Dots on sale for ~60cpr too, if you feel like ordering online.

If you're in an Eastern state or otherwise typically have sub-150lb deer, the Hornady generic "soft point" you can get in the 50rd boxes will do the job. It's not as good as a bonded softpoint but for smaller deer (and hogs and people and basically anything else human-sized) they work.

I was hog hunting with a buddy a few years back, just walking the roads of the ranch I hunt at and we came across a lone hog. He was up to take the shot this time, and he hit it pretty much perfectly.

After giving it some time we went to go look for it, however, the blood trail suddenly stopped. This wasn't deep in the brush either, we were in a valley with really sparse vegetation. The hogs fat must have sealed up around the bullet hole and it most likely lived.

I mainly hunt with a bow at close ranges(less that 30 yards) where I can get a heart/double lung shot, but when I do gun hunt, I don't use anything smaller than 7.62x39mm in case I come across a hog like that.

You'll be good to go for the eating sized hogs with an AR though.

I'm in the same boat as you. Currently trying to teach myself to hunt.

Thing is, I went to buy a rifle a week or so ago, and I got denied on the background check. I have no idea why, they couldn't even tell me. Had to send in an appeal form the the government and still haven't heard back. So much for the 2nd amendment.

If I can't buy a rifle, I don't see how I can ever hunt. Just going straight to a bow? Buying from a private seller or something?

Anybody got any advice? I'm hoping I just have an outstanding red light camera ticket or something, but I really don't know.

My dad has also expressed interest in joining. His licenses were from NJ a billion years ago though and he's familiar with guns. I'm in NH resident but I regularly stay in Maine for a weekend or a week at a time.. Where do we start? Is trapping worth it if I don't own my own property nor know anyone with property? Besides deer I'm interested in coyotes, foxes, martens, fishers, etc so trapping is what I'm looking for mostly.

Gun laws here are really relaxed and casual to the point most things are just pointing to 'walk in and buy one' or 'go to the Kittery trading post'. I've never fired any and in NJ they required a training class, I'm just not sure about here.

Part of being a hunter is killing the animal as efficiently as possible. Sticking an arrow in a deer's gut is a shitty thing to do, you won't get the meat, and it will die a slow death from infection. Don't be a fuck, respect the animals you're killing.

Pic related. Took a big bull moose with the rifle 3 years ago now, haven't gotten much hunting in since. I just ran out of meat from that hunt recently, and that's with everything I shared with family and friends. I take the brake off when I take it out on a hunt, but it helps prevent developing a flinch when practicing. POI shift is minimal and it only takes a few shots to re-zero.

Shot my last deer with a 30-30 at 150 yards and a peep sight. 170 gr rem core lokt. Hit him through the shoulder. Shattered the shoulder, obliterated the lung, broke the other leg. No exit wound. He dropped dead within seconds. Would recommend.

He was a 4x4 mulie in Arizona. He dressed at 140 pounds. Not huge, not small. I got 52 pounds of meat from him. I would have gotten a bit more but the shoulder was damaged considerably from hitting the bone.

OP, where in Michigan are you? I'm a recovering fat fuck who's getting /out/ more and I'm trying to pick up hunting. "Actual" hunting though, in that I want to scout out land, stalk, learn to read the wind, etc.

I live in Traverse City so if you're near there maybe next season or whatever we can plan something and go hunting in Hiawatha Forest or something. I'm new to hunting like I said but I'm a /k/unt and have been around firearms my whole life so I could help you out with marksmanship and that stuff if you need help with it.

Gun rack at the deer shack last autumn (southern hemisphere). From top to bottom:

M70 is mine, rest belong to the other lads. All of us have New Zealand Svord knives for field dressing.
