Feel free to post tobaccos (no weed allowed), pipes, collections, pics of favorite combos for going /out/, pics of what you're doing with your pipe and any questions you might have.
Want to get into smoking pipes without spending too much cash?
Get a Missouri Meerschaum Legend corncob pipe and a pouch of either Prince Albert, Carter Hall or Half and Half tobacco, available at most drugstores.
What you'll need: pipe, tobacco, lighter or matches, pipe cleaners, and either a regular old nail or a pipe tool (combination tamper, scoop, and small pick).
All of these together should run you less than $20.
Having trouble keeping your pipe lit? Fill it with less tobacco and smoke it slower than you think you need to, lightly tamping as needed when the smoke starts thinning out.
If you're still having trouble, try filling your pipe this way:

Why does pipe tobacco smell so good? Cigarettes stink, cigars are even worse, but the smell of someone smoking a pipe is divine. Is it just how the tobacco is prepared?

How long can pipe tobacco last for? I bought some like 4 or 5 years ago and stuck it in a glass jar. It still feels a bit moist, like usual, and it smells just fine. Will it get me sick or something if I use it?
Anonymous
>>1093063 it can last years and years in an airtight container. many smokers cellar tobacco like it's wine.
i dont know if theres a date on the tins that limits the period of time theyre allowed to be sold in. but a while back i went into tobacco/wine shop nearby me and I asked for a specific tobacco and she told me she'd had to throw all of that tobacco out, because it had gotten too old.
usually as long as the vacuum is not broken, the tobacco is fine, so she probably didnt know what she was talking about. I shouldve asked her to keep those "old" tins for me. maybe I could buy them for cheap, but I didnt ask...

My Missouri Meerschaum Legacy pipe is beginning to flake on the outside, around the top of the bowl. I think it's because I left it outside unprotected too much on my porch. While it's never been rained on directly, the moisture differentials may have weakened the integrity of the pipe. So I guess the point of this post is, take care of your shit! If you have a cob pipe maybe you don't need to always have it wrapped when you're not using it but at least bring it inside when you're done.
Anonymous
Quoted By:
>>1093273 Just take it inside and let it dry a bit and you'll be fine. Chances are nothing that's happened is fatal to your pipe. Surface cracking and flaking look bad, but are usually harmless.
A bigger problem is if your stem loosens up from the bowl, but even that is easily fixed. If the bowl starts to separate from the stem, just put some wood glue around the joint again, and your pipe should work as good as new.

I tend to smoke Vanilla Cavendish with a briar pipe. Can't find a good picture, but it has a great draw and a really nice feel to it. Easy to clean too. Used to have a hand carved artisan pear wood pipe, but I lost it on a hike. I really wish I knew more about pipe tobacco or herbs. Things that taste good, smell good, and herbs that add the extra effects. Talking mugwort and St John's wart.

more or less a spirit quest is done when its time for a boy to become a man, but can be done later in life. You go off into nature alone and from there the activities vary from tribe to tribe
some you had to strip nearly naked, start fasting, and lay on a cold stone with flint knives between your toes to keep you awake until hallucinations start
some involved fasting and eating pyote
others would have you spend a certain amount of time in the woods to cleanse yourself before smoking the red sumac leaves
or you can just stab a whole bunch of wooden spikes through your skin and run through a large crowd of people as they rip them out of your flesh, that was apparently some tribes replacement for a spirit quest
the things you see are supposed to have deep meaning about who you are and what you can be in life, but generally your supposed to tell what you see to a shaman of sorts to get it sorted out and explained

Anyone else growing tobacco? Some of my first picked leaves are drying green. It's frustrating because I don't have the electricity to build/run an artificial curing chamber and the weather here in Ontario is relatively cold and dry. Not sure what to do except for wait it out a bit longer until the leaves on the plants are REALLY yellow. I'm afraid frosts will come before then, but oh well.
Anonymous
>>1095493 I'm not yet but i wont lie i am interested in trying it, i heard growing is relatively easy but the curing is the hard part?
Anonymous
>>1095503 Yeah, growing it isn't difficult; just time consuming. You have to know how to deal with potential pests though. I've been having aphids attack my plants, but it hasn't been difficult to deal with (I just spray them with a garlic + dish soap + water mixture). They definitely left marks on the leaves but from what I've read that's just a cosmetic thing.
Curing is the hard part because it takes some experience to really get to know how the hanging tobacco leaves react to different environments. I've gone through a number of test runs and feel I understand what the leaves need, but actually emulating that environment is relatively difficult, especially without the right resources.
In warm moist climates farmers can get away with plucking the leaves while they're still green and have them cure over a long period of time. Up here in Ontario however it's already cool and dry, so I have to wait until the leaves on my plants are REALLY yellow before plucking. Otherwise the leaves dry green, and you don't want that. I just hope the frosts don't come before then, otherwise I'm not sure what I'll do. Building a curing chamber isn't an option for me right now.

>>1095544 Not all tobaccos are put through fermentation. I don't really know too much about it except for how it's generally done. They usually take a whole stack of leaves and just lay them up on top of each other. It's important to really monitor it though because the center of the stack can grow very moist and develop mold. From what I understand fermented tobacco tastes a lot sweeter, though I have no experience with it so I can't say. I'm still a novice at cultivating tobacco and am constantly learning.
>>1095567 You want the air to be relatively moist so that it doesn't dry too quickly. But the rafters of a barn is pretty ideal. I can only guess what the climate in Indiana is like. I would try to start the seeds indoors somewhere in february and then plant them outdoors after the last frost. Don't harvest the leaves until they're pretty yellow. The good thing about this harvesting method is that it takes a while to harvest all the leaves, starting from the bottom of the plant. This sort of gives you time to see how the first group of leaves react to the barn. If it's too dry then you could bring in a few tubs of water to try and keep the moisture up.
Another curing method would be to slowing burn pine in the barn and apparently that gives the tobacco a unique taste. I'm not sure if this technique would work in a dry climate though. It might dry the tobacco too quickly.

fellow /out/ists i've started smoking pipe a few months back, partly inspired by this thread. Like every aimless young adult i smoked cigarettes on occasion, but I never got why people got addicted to them. Great timing that I was able to find this thread, because I smoked a pipe for the first time yesterday. I have a question that hopefully anon can answer. I have a Yello-bole Spartan that I picked up, used, years ago. It had clearly been repaired, at least as far as my noob eyes could see because there were some cracks in the paint at the bottom of the bowl that had been sealed with some kind of clear coating. I eventually got it lit, but after I was done and tried to clean it out the yellow paint in the bowl had become kind of greasy, and started rubbing off. Did I fuck up or is this normal? Was I cleaning too aggressively? Was it repaired badly? Is there something I can do to fix it?

Anonymous
>>1097787 First off, don't panic. All is not lost.
The "yellow paint" is actually a coating of honey.
Yello-Bole's schtick was that when you smoked it the very first time, the honey would turn into a layer of sticky ash, which will help build up the layer of "cake" on the inside of the bowl that helps a good pipe to smoke cool and protects it.
But if you rub it off, it's not a disaster. Briar is pretty fireproof as it is, and a layer of cake will build up naturally as you smoke it, even without the coating of honey.
Going forward, you don't really need to clean inside the bowl of a briar pipe, other than scraping out some of the cake on the walls of the bowl when it gets thicker than the width of a nickel. All you really need to clean out is the trash in the mouthpiece and airway.

I recently acquired some pipes at an antique shop; do these have any value? How much work would it take to restore these things to smokable condition?
Anonymous
>>1098154 Not much work to restore them. Just wipe the crud off of the outside with some damp paper towels, run some 91% isopropyl alcohol through the mouthpieces and stems until they come out clean, and scrape off most of the caked on ash in the bowls with a pocket knife. Then just wait a day to let the pipe bowl dry out again, fill, light and smoke.
Value:
I can see that you have at least two Dr Grabow briar pipes and two Dr Grabow Viking model aluminum pipes (the spade logo on the side is their particular maker's mark). The good news is they're great pipes. The bad news is they're not that valuable-only around $10-15 each when in great shape. So you probably paid around what they go for in the condition they are in.
This is a buyer's market for pipes. Old stuff is everywhere, cheap, and buyers can afford to be picky about condition. There are still some name brands and custom makers that are worth more than $20 each (sometimes MUCH more), but they are few and far between. Most of the used pipes you find out in the wild will be worth about $5-10 each.
At any rate, to see what it's really worth, check the side of the briar pipes for a name and/or maker's mark. For metal bodied pipes, you can find the name stamped under the bottom of the bowl. Once you know what you have, it's a simple matter to check eBay's sold listings to know what they are really selling for.

Also check to see which ones they are; chances are they're not anything special, but you do get people who have inherited a load of Dunhills and such which are definitely worth taking good care of.
Otherwise, take off the stems and soak them in alcohol (91% iso or a neutral tasting spirit, whatever you have better access to), ream the cake back a little (not all the way, unless there's a nasty taste in the pipe, which is called 'ghosting', usually stemming from aromatics and such), put a cotton ball int he bowl and soak that in alcohol to help remove ghosting, give it a good clean as said above (buy pipe cleaners in bulk, you will NEVER have enough), and it should be good to go.
You may want to get the pipes restored if they're been chewed/beaten to hell and back, which is common on old pipes, especially those that were heavily used. But otherwise pipes were made to be smoked. You use cutlery that other people have used all the time, so a pipe is no different.

It's actually far safer than cigarette smoking (which taste bad anyway) or cigars; I'd be hesitant in trusting that study entirely because it does date back to the 1960s, but it seems decent enough and probably won't be repeated. In addition, unlike cigarette smokers, many pipe smokers are not habitual smokers and feel the NEED to smoke on a regular basis. Many pipe smokers will have a few bowls a week or even less, thus further reducing the risk.
Again not saying 'IT'S PERFECTLY SAFE, SMOKE UP', but I love the taste and smell of tobacco and it's the best and safest way to enjoy good tobacco. it's also cheaper than cigarettes or cigars, at least unless you live in Canada or whatever.

Basically H&K is Heckler and Koch, a German firearms company and famously did a photo shoot for a promotional material where they had the bullets loaded in backwards.

Eurofag here. Relative was in America and I asked him to bring me some american pipe tobacco. Was hoping for something nice, instead I got this cigarette tobacco look-alike thing. Should I even bother smoking this?

>>1100653 >too small You do realize that like half of us have a MM Mini, right? There's no such thing as too small unless you're talking penises or bank accounts.
If you like it and you can afford it, go for it. Neat shape, seems to be a neat size.

I have a small Meerschaum myself. It's great for going out when the weather is cold, misty and overcast but not really rainy.
That weather will wreck briars, but a meer just shrugs it off.

Where do my fellow Canadians buy from? Is there a way to avoid the taxes?

>>1100903 No can do. It has to be declared on customs forms, and if they don't declare it as a "gift", YOU get to pay the import duties on it.
So you've got that going for you.
