They look goofy as shit but they work, I've got one that I mainly use on my boat and I have yet to find a hat that works better, anything without the neckguard doesn't stop reflection from the water so you still get sunburns on the back of your neck.

I use a lifeguard hat, I thought it was expensive at the time but it makes being out in the sun bearable. I usually wet it down for extra cooling in the AZ sun.

You feel silly at first wearing one but after the first time your neck gets burned because you didn't have it you stop caring how it looks. Also a good bandanna will help you out a lot. If I'm trying to cool down I soak one in water and tie it around my neck. For fly control tuck it under my hat and let it dangle over my neck.

This has the advantage of being more durable than the straw lifeguard-type hat, though the straw is lighter. Take your pick. I wear things with brims all around and have never had burn on the back of the neck. A cloth back there would restrict air flow.

My sun hats are one of these and an Outdoor Research Sun Runner which is kinda like OP's.

The brim of the OR is short and narrow. The protection is not nearly as good as pic related. The upside to the OR is it's better in wind.

Looks good, and is good for keeping sun, rain and snow out of my face.

The way I figure it with hats today: the worse it looks the better. See, one of the reasons the "fedora" looks bad is he is perceived as thinking his hat looks good, right?
