Have any /out/ists explored any abandoned mines? I went on a tour of an old mine from the 1870s and it kindled an interest in exploring mines. I've already explored a couple that aren't too far from where I live. Anyone else done it?

Really the biggest dangers are animals that may be inside (snakes, spiders, etc) and cave-ins if the mine was to give way. How come you didn't go too far into the mine?

I use to do a lot of mine exploring in Nevada as a kid in the summer time. There was this one mine that still had tracks and a pump cart and I use to ride that up and down the tracks when bored.

The only mines around are coal mines and I've been told they are particularly dangerous due to gas build up so I've stayed out.

Anyone got any experience with these sorts of things? I don't want to die, and I can't afford to drop 3 grand on a gas monitor, but I would really like to explore them sometime.

I'm an MSHA certified hard rock underground miner. I hold an MSHA number as a mining contractor as well.

None of this shit is safe, but you will probably get away with it in dry hardrock mines in places like Utah and Nevada and California.

You couldn't pay me to go into a wet mine or a coal mine without my respirator and a multi gas monitor.

these anons are risking death. Entering a coal mine is almost guaranteeing it.

pass a physical, lift 70 lbs. Before you can work you'll also need your MSHA and safety training, usually a CDL, and trained how to operate heavy equipment. Mining companies don't like to train new miners, so it's not easy to get into with 0 experience

4 10's or even 3 12's are typical. Long shifts, a lot of time off. It varies by company and by position.

I've got 2 coal mines near my house, one a traditional and one a strip mine.

Both will hire people with heavy equipment experience, but the pay is SHIIIIIT. Strip mine starts at $12, traditional mine starts at $14.

No, most of our mines in CO are wet. I just mean dripping water from the ceiling and walls. Probably water running out of the adit, and perhaps some flooded shafts.

Where there's water in a mine there's usually unstable ground, decayed timbers, underwater obstacles, and bad air.

Colorado has been systematically plugging and sealing the old mines. I don't personally know of any large ones you could get into. I know a few small ones that might or might not still be open, but I haven't looked at them in years so they could be plugged for all I know.

I used to play in the mines above Georgetown when I was a kid, but none of them were very deep and I don't know if they've been sealed by now.

Your best bet is probably just to pay for an underground mine tour at Idaho Springs or Leadville or wherever.

I don't really work in mines anymore though. I pay other people to move dirt is all. The dirt we move just happens to be on mine sites.

I'll post a couple pretty rocks if you want though.

can't tell exactly what's in this pic from the thumbnail but it looks like pyrite, maybe some sliver/galena, and some radiating lenticular malachite.

this pic has some of my favorite ores off old closed mine sites.
Some pyrite, chrysocolla/malachite/azurite, and a gorgeous chunk of galena/sphalerite/chalcopyrite.

I have about a ton of ore specimens around the house and garage. Most of them aren't that interesting to look at unless you happen to be a geologist or collector.

Here's some cool junk I've found in and around old mines-

Parts of dynamite crates, a chunk of mine car rail that was cut off and used as a doorstop, a blasting cap tin, an old padlock, an old detonator battery, a hanging oil lamp from way back in the day, a crucible full of metal, a couple hand steels for drilling rock by hand, an old drill core, and a blacksmith's hammer.

the problem is it's dark and everything is covered in dust and mud. Also the odds of finding a cool specimen in the mined-out walls of an adit or tunnel are nil. I know guys that mined all their lives and have one or two really cool crystal specimens, but those kinds of finds are very rare and usually destroyed or overlooked. Most of what I have came off of mine dumps or as gifts from other miners. The samples I have from actual jobs I worked on are not exciting to look at. I have bags and buckets full of ore that's worth tens of thousands of dollars per ton in silver and gold but you'd never know it to look at it. It just looks like worthless rusty quartz.

For example this is a fairly typical looking bucket of high-dollar gold ore. About 50 lbs of quartz and mica schist.

it contains about $150 worth of gold and silver but you sure can't tell by looking at it. It's boring looking stuff. Only an assay would tell you that it's worth anything.

Thanks for posting, I happen to be both a geologist and a collector. Best stroke of luck I ever had was meeting the girlfriend of a blaster in Michigan. She sent me a picture of something he found, which I bought for $50. I wound up selling it for a few thousand, but by then she had broken up with him, and refused to give me his number. If I was a miner, I'd probably get fired because there's no way I could tear my attention away from specimens.

well I love collecting rocks but I never spent any time raking through muck piles looking for nice specimens. Like I said, dark and muddy.

aside from that most miners where I live make enough money to just buy nice specimens if they want. Guys making six figures running a mucker or a jumbo can afford to go the rock shop and drop a few thousand dollars any time they feel like it.

what survives is buried under tons of muck
and coated in mud
and then immediately scooped up with a mucker and put on a train to a conveyer to a mill where it gets crushed without anyone ever looking at it.

the people that actually see some specimens are probably the lab guys at the mill, but even then odds of finding anything are really small.

I know of one specimen mine where I live, the Sweet Home rhodochrosite mine. All they mine there is specimens. Probably couldn't run off with any of those though.

Yea that piece you posted is probably half a million or more. The best rhodochrosite rhombs in the world, hands down. The company who recovers them is called Collector's Edge, they do specimen mining around the world. Talk about a kick-ass job. But it's expensive to work the mines and it's hard to locate pockets. Here's a gold I got recently.

No, it's crystalline gold from Brazil. There are gold pseudomorph after pyrite, but they're from Russia and are extremely rare

My firm has the capacity and qualifications, but there aren't any mines in my area that consistently produced great specimens. A person would about have to move to Brazil or Mexico. We do have a local gold mine that was known for its wire and sponge gold, but I believe Newmont currently owns it and has no interest in leasing.

Not that you'd want to own or lease the thing anyways- any money you made of museum pieces would easily be lost when the EPA decided you're a PRP.

most of the gold there was epimorphic after quartz and pyrite which is typical enough of native gold, but the deposit was a hydrothermal supergene enrichment that occasionally replaced parts of crystals with gold. Primarily pyrite because of its solubility, but quartz isn't unknown here. The crystals are small, the gold was deposited in a fairly fine matrix. It mostly looks like dendritic gold but it's not.

The guy worked illegally up on the dump for over a year finding several ounces including the piece in my pic. Eventually word got out and pretty soon there was about 20 guys working it. I went up to see what they were doing, but I didn't dig any gold because I was under contract with the mine owner at the time. (this was when ASARCO owned it during their bankruptcy).

They moved ~100 yards of dirt and I'd estimate recovered about $10k in specimen gold before I shut them down. Most of it is still on sale on ebay. They were never charged with a crime because the mine was in receivership at the time.

I know where the gold is up there but I'd never take any just because my company does work for the owner.

What he did is he put down a sheet of 3/4 inch plywood flat on the ground, right? then he'd shovel a couple shovels full of dump dirt out on that plywood, and spread it out thin. Then he'd run his metal detector over the dirt and pick out any gold he detected. Then he'd flip the plywood and dump the dirt down the hill before getting another little load. He went through a part of the dump that's the size of a small house doing this. Working all day every fucking day.

I don't think he even made minimum wage off of it. He literally would've made 10 times more washing dishes at the local diner, and he would've done far less work. I'm sure he had fun doing it, but I prefer to make money.

That's where my piece is from, there are mtiple claims owned by some companies but for about 6 months there were 5000 garimpieros illegally mining millions of dollars of specimen gold. Eventually the police shut it down, and confiscated and or sold the gold themselves

Like I told him, I don't care about someone collecting specimens for their private collection but what he was doing was industrial mining without a permit on someone else's land.

I would love to go mine in Brazil, I'd probably end up very dead though. Also the way they handle mercury amalgamation there is just horrifying.

I find them by looking up old gold mine production figures from the 1800's. I find an old mine that produced huge amounts of gold and then find out who owns it now. Then I ask if they'd be interested in leasing the property to me. If they agree I go take samples off the mine dump and run assays. Based on that I might make them an offer to haul off their mine dump in exchange for a wad of cash. This particular batch the owner didn't accept my offer to lease the mine, so I ended up with a few hundred pounds of good gold ore sitting around.

I made a couple thousand dollars just off the ton of rock and dirt he let me take. It's a really rich mine. Not well known but very rich.

The way they were mining this new gold in Mato Grosso is different from the Mercury amalgamation stuff they do, which is definitely very dangerous. You can find videos of this new find being worked, they use hand tools to break up a fine-grained rock and the gold seems to just fall right out in huge crystalline masses, some up to hundreds of grams. What's strange is that in the slum town that sprung up, most of the people are just standing around rather than working. The place is called Pontes e Lacerda, serra do caldeirao claims, you can find the vid on YouTube

I live on Dartmoor in the UK which has a long history of tin mining. There are a fair few mines dotted about, although very few are anywhere near safe enough to enter. A lot of them have caved in and the rest are generally capped or flooded.

Speaking of rails, my parents have recently had the lintels replaced on their house and found that the old ones were all constructed out of old rail track from the local mine.

I had some property in California. My asshole neighbor's kid/nephews tried doing this with a gold mine on my property. They ran gas powered generators and pumps to access the mine. They were retards and didnt realize that exhaust gas is heavier than air. They also thought a oscillating desk fan would be adequate to ventilate the mine shaft. When they went down there to try to steal my gold they all died. Then their asshole parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against me for a amount in excess of 1.5 million.

I represented myself in court and they dropped the case after a year before it went to trial. They and their kike hoped I would just settle or had insurance which would give them a pay out. I told them to get fucked and that I wouldnt even give them a dollar to go away.

yes, but your property held it in place long enough to do its job. Depends on the state and I don't know Cali's laws, but in many states you'd absolutely be liable. Because breaking onto your property and running a generator isn't normally fatal. It was a very specific hazard that caused their death, that being your mine.

I don't agree with these liability laws, just saying they do exist most places.

No it was the carbon monoxide poisoning according to the autopsy. The carbon monoxide which came from their pumps and generators. The entere idea of premises liability comes from a REASONABLE expectation of safety of a premises. There is no reasonable expectation in a abandoned mineshaft filled with water. Any reasonable person would know it would be inherently dangerous inside of it.

My state recognized that the average person isn't aware of the danger of entering mines, and requires mine owners to placard and barrier their mines.

it's in the MSHA section on hazard communications. It's federal law, states just enforce it.

I'm surprised if you didn't hear from MSHA in your case. If so I'm sure they mentioned the laws you're breaking.

the legal question is if they're responsible for their own safety on the property, not just if they were aware of the danger. The answer varies by state and situation.

even if they were aware of the danger that killed them, that doesn't imply they were aware of other dangers present on your property, or that you don't have a responsibility to warn them.
