Anyone else from /out/ live in NYS? I really want to just get in my car and car camp/sleep in my car while hiking during the day but it seems that's not something I can really do without reserving a campsite in upstate NY.

I'm a student in Buffalo and I'd really like to just go somewhere. But anywhere I select in NY (like Letchworth) is $100 a weekend. Any places nearby I can go to (~2 hours drive or less).

Look into heading into PA, south of Erie. That was my go to area when I was at UB. Can't remember specific camp sites tho

Try allegheny national forest in PA it's only 2hr drive from buffalo and nat forests are free

Visiting the Adirondack State Park is worth it anon. I just drive my car to a trailhead parking lot, sleep in my car, and then wake up in the morning to start hiking.

Another option, Presque isle state park in Erie PA. It's right on a peninsula going into lake Erie. This time of year there aren't that many people. They don't have a campground, but there is a campground called Saras right at the entrance. The park is great if you have a kayak, and there are hiking trails too. The main draw is the lake. I will say that it's not exactly rustic, there are roads and paved oaths through the park, so without a kayak the hiking isn't as good. Fishing is good though.

Saras campground you can camp right on the beach in a tent, pretty cool.

Allegheny national forest I also reccomend. Been there dozens of times. Went every year as a kid, and into my early adulthood camping. I love it there. Willow bay has tiny cabins to rent. They're just a bed and some room to change, but warner and dryer than a tent.

Unfortunately there isn't much around CNY or WNY without going to PA, there's nothing around here but farms and amish. As far as I'm concerned the Adirondacks and to a lesser extent the Catskills are all there really is up here

I'm in Broome county and NYS is typically kind of shit when it comes to good camping. The best trip I've ever been on though is out in the Catskills at Balsam Lake. There's a firetower that's a nice hike to and the scenery is great. I went for a weekend last September with a buddy and it's great. We started at Alder Lake, hiked to a leanto, then hiked up to the firetower the next day and back to the car after packing up. Overall the last hike ended up to be somewhere around 11 miles.

I'm just south of Broome county, like 5 miles into PA. For just quick overnights I usually go to Oakley Corners state forest outside of Endicott.

Any other good Broome county places?

My parents have about 500 acres of farm land 30 min south of here, I camp there often.

I haven't really found anything good. Theres a few places that aren't too bad, but not much around here. Boman Lake in Oxford has a nice fire tower to hike to that's like 6 miles away. And Chenango Valley State Park is nice to vehicle camp in.

There is Salt Springs state park in PA about 20 min south of Vestal, it's not bad. I like places I can dispersed camp wherever, which kind if limits me to state forests in MY. I've hiked Jones Park in Vestal, and Aqua Terra park is supposed to be alright, it's a former ski resort, so the trails follow some old ski trails. No camping there though.

Oswego county reporting in.

For someone from out of town doing /out/ things can seem difficult here but if you know the right people there are endless opportunities. My favorite thing to do while /out/ is fish so this county suites me perfectly. Kinda hard to camp here though. Unless you have family or friends with land you are limited to the protected forests. You could definitely drive around the dirt roads and pull off and camp where ever though if you wanted. People do it all the time

If you wanted to camp somewhere up here though you might as well just add an extra hour or two to the drive and just go the adirondacks. Some really beautiful spots over there.

You can camp with zero permit in most of the Adirondacks. 6 million acres...bigger than two Yellowstones and Yosemite combined.

Yeah the adirondacks are undoubtedly superior for /out/ activities but I'm telling you if you get creative and like to explore there is plenty of opportunities right here in our county. As for the public land, there isn't a ton but it's certainly there. You just gotta do some googleing of the area around you. I like heading up towards tug hill and camping in the kasoag forest. Winona state forest is nice too.

I'm in Oswego County! I'm a student at the school, SUNY Oswego.

We have an Outdoors club and there's tones of opportunity for out activities. Just last weekend we hiked upper and lower Wolfjaw in the Adirondacks.

For those in Oswego County, do you know anywhere I could go small game hunting? Specifically squirrel hunting. I recently bought and air rifle for this purpose but I'm not too familiar with the area outside Oswego itself. I saw that there's the Deer Creek wildlife preserve, anyone know anything about that?

OP, I have family in UB; their outdoors program is pretty top. Get with them and ask about locations/go on a trip with them if you're not autistic. if you do, maybe we could sycnh up Buffalo's outdoors club and Oswego's

This should help you with what you are looking for. Ive been in Deer creek area before, not to hunt we were kayaking the creek. Honestly if you wanted to hunt squirrel imo you'd be better off going a little further and hit Winona forest. Its bigger and a much better place for squirrel hunting.

Harriman state park/Bear mountain are some of my favorite places to backpack in the fall. Beautiful trails and foliage.
No reservations necessary because of the AT and lots of free overnight parking.
