Trailer ratings are bullshit for the most part.
My old half-ton was more than rated for my trailer.
>4700lbs, add a sled or two, fuel, gear, etc>2x 3500lb axles, electric brakes, adjusted yearlyYet I had to replace brakes on the truck every other oil change. 6000ft home elevation, over 11k mountain passes, trailhead at 9k, then back home at the end of the day.
Upgraded to a 3/4-ton heavy-duty.
Bigger brakes.
4.56 differentials.
Same trailer, same axles/brakes on it.
Went 4 years before I did brakes on that pickup.
Getting truck+trailer going is one thing.
Stopping it and pulling it safely is a different story, and that's one that ratings won't tell you about.
If I ever get a bigger trailer, I'll probably skip the 1-ton and go straight to a 4500- or 5500-series medium duty.
