Well for starters dont buy those unless you are winning races regularly, imo. Also, having a hardtail is totally fine. Look on CL right now and you will probably see ~6 different dank ass hardtails for under 800.

I still ride my old bike from the 90s.

If you're just getting into it, buy a used hardtail. Besides being cheaper you'll actually learn bike handling skills instead of letting the suspension make up for your incompetence.

Make it a priority in your life.

You're not going to "just get sponsors" that "give you free shit" without proving to them you're committed to the sport with or without their support.
And sponsorships aren't just "gibs me free shit" - if you're in it for that, you're in it for the wrong reasons. Motorsports is a small industry - everyone talks to each other. When you go out asking for gibsmedats, you'll get a reputation in the industry for being an annoying kid who wants free shit without working for it.

The time, miles, work I put into my sports, i'd be money ahead working my real job for those hours and paying retail for what I get vs. what I get from sponsorships.

A $110 Huffy will last most hobbyist riders several years, and potentially last a hobbyist trail rider a decade with standard maintenance.

Hell I started on a $50 Huffy (back when you could get them for $50). I got 6 years out of it before I bent a rim beyond repair, which is when I bought my Cannondale. And I rode 2-3x a week year round.

I got a frame with a shock on "steep and cheap" then just bought all the other bike parts using Amazon and such. I put the bike together watching YouTube videos and the only thing I had to do professionally is the brake bleed.

Those 5k+ bikes only make sense if you're racing. Just like with cars, you pay out the nose for an extra 5% in performance.

Maybe if you stay on gravel paths. I started breaking parts on my first real off-road ride and in the year I had it the POS needed more in maintenance than it was worth. And that was a rigid bike, anything that cheap with suspension will be even worse. Used real bikes are a much better value.

Also, if you're breaking parts on a "real" offroad bike, you're thrashing the shit out of it and anything would have broken. I do downhill for fun on a $400 Cannondale and the only part I've ever broken was a rim.

I have an Intense Tracer 275C bought second hand for 3k, and an Intense Spider XVP that I got used for 700 with some spares a couple of years back.

The Tracer is of course not necessary for me, I could do just as well with an AL Canyon Strive, or GT Sanction Expert, but it's only money, what else are you gonna spend it on? A casket? Spend and live.

This is why I got into motorcycles. I bought a used dual sport for $2000 (obviously there's more costs after) and I ride the fuck out of it. Exploring my state, riding through forests and reaching hiking spots. Running errands, highway traveling....
It was way more bang for the buck. I still ride my $600 hardtail from 2010. Cycling is fun but it hurts my ass and riding uphill is for plebs.
